Audience Member A young novice leaves her convent behind and goes out seeking a lost brother before deciding whether to take her vows and become a full nun. Quirky and well-acted and emanently watchable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Un film initiatique aux accents de jeunesse sensibles. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member AVRIL.. En France,Novice Avril, a gifted artist, is offered the temptation to leave the convent she has called home all her life to experience the world outside before renouncing it to serve God in isolation.. especially as, she is told, ?somewhere in this world, you have a brother?. Hatchet-face Mother Superior has other ideas, never leave and take eternal vows. Off she goes and meets a nice boy (Pierre) and they set off to find her bro. Delicate performances all round give the opening scenes a real sense that we have a destination to reach with this story.. albeit a gentle stroll, not a sprint? I think it?s worth it; and the subtitling is sharp, witty and charming. Meeting bro (David) on a deserted beach ( it?s low budget ok).. and a precarious (at times) bonding gets going, accommodating, as it has to, Davids? boyfriend, Jim and Pierre.. On returning to the convent, skeletons tumble out of confessionals and and this contemplative storytelling builds to a quietly booming finale. It?s a mood movie, love it or hate it.. I was captivated.
