What to Know

Critics Consensus

A winning showcase for Megan Stalter, Too Much's approach to modern love is coolly detached but creator Lena Dunham's sharp sense of humor remains just right.

It can be eruptive and lacerating along the way, but there’s also room for a rom-com reckoning. It’s anything but generic: only Lena Dunham could have made this. Go to Full Review

A genre-savvy, meta romantic comedy in the tradition of Emily Henry’s novels and the best of Nora Ephron. Go to Full Review

Stalter is a sensational comic performer, and one of the things she’s best able to do is to convey the frenzied insecurity of her character. Go to Full Review

Given the Dunham pedigree, it’s sure to be as polarizing as everything else she’s done in her career and private life. But for those who can meet Too Much with an open mind, there’s a lot here to like. Go to Full Review

It’s a story about being too much -- messing up, getting older, struggling to fit in -- but, paradoxically, it can feel over the top itself: laborious and exhausting. Go to Full Review

In my view, “Too Much” is a fun watch and is literally “too much” in the British sense of the phrase, meaning truly terrific. Go to Full Review

Jes H @JesHai Feb 4 Megan Stalter is too funny to be cast as a stand in for Lena Dunham! The script is awkward and uncomfortable but strangely not due to the lead character who is specifically meant to be this way. It’s just the off putting way Dunham writes and directs. It feels cold and forced, and we know these actors are all better than this. The type of British "fairy tale romance" vibes are devoid of any of the warmth and naturalness of what makes actual British shows and movies so endearing. Which is very ironic. I found the whole thing so hard to watch and realised why I hated Girls so much. This feels like a throw back to peak Millennial aspirational tv shows which just feel so dated now, and kinda delusional. I want someone to give Stalter a lead in something good See more Doha R Jan 31 The show would have been so much better if the main character weren't so obnoxious. I don't know why writers' perception of a "chatoic woman" is an irresponsible, obnoxious person. Felix was a grounded charater but other than that i don't think there's anything to the show. There isn’t one good thing I can think about the main character; she’s obsessed with her ex and his fiancée, does not think at all before acting, has a terrible sense of humor where she just says inappropriate things to sound "funny", lacks self-awareness, and overall is insufferable. See more Rosie W @Otakulady Jan 31 I like Girls, I would re-watch girls and still find it funny. But "too much" is just not it, story is bad, acting is bad. I was excited to find the show, but shortly after 2 episodes, I completely tap out of it. It feels like a Wet Dream of a younger version of Lena. Just meaningless sex with hotter guys. The main character’s line deliver is boring, it’s like a worse version of "Emily in Paris". This is "Lena in London". I think the costar or other supporting actors are more engaging in acting. Overall just bad show you can run in the background See more Monde K @birdmonger09 Jan 29 i’ll be honest- i could only watch up to episode 2. everything is cringe. i first thought its a specific acting style that i’ll grow accustomed to. but i got bored by the storyline and gave up See more Mike W @Mikee203 Jan 2 I really thought I would like this show but it’s really painful to watch. Has some great actors in it but I just found myself getting so annoyed with the main character. I don’t think I can even watch her in anything else now. Maybe not even "Hacks". This show might really hurt her career. Sad. 😢 See more Jason @jasinner Dec 24 This is a bad British version of Girls. The characters are boring, the story is boring. Don't waste your time on this series See more Read all reviews
