Synopsis
In 1920 Berlin, petty criminal Franz Biberkopf (Heinrich George) is released from prison. Astonished by the changes that modernity has brought about while he was jailed, Franz finds life unsettling, but he's determined to go straight as he returns to his wife, Sonja (Margaret Schlegel). Unable to avoid detection by his former criminal cronies, Franz struggles against resuming his old life. But when he refuses to pay them bribery money, his decision results in catastrophe for him and Sonja.
