Travis N There is a ton of LovecraftIan content out there. Most of it not super great. This movie is the rare exception. Absolutely loved it. Filming it as a black-and-white picture was a great aesthetic choice. The actors are all excellent as well. Bryan Moore really knows how to execute a visual interpretation of a Lovecraft story. You can tell he is an avid fan of the original work. Highly recommended if you're a Lovecraft fan. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/11/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting series of Black and white shorts from Lovecraft's stories that is probably only of interest to serious fans. Of particular note is the "The Hound" a sesquipedalion little gem that is one of my favorite stories. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I was pleasantly surprised by this one. When the movie first started it looked like a cheap college project filmed on 16 mm in black and white. What it turned out to be was a well-acted and well-directed film. The 16 mm B&W is used to evoke a mood and the director actually pulls it off instead of using the film as a shorthand for actual atmosphere. The story is a faithful adaptation of the Lovecraft story by the same name. A young man moves into a boarding house and is startled by an odd-smelling liquid leaking from the ceiling. His landlady tells him it is from the machine run by his upstairs neighbour, a former doctor, to keep his room cool. A heart attack prompts the young man to seek help from the doctor and they become friends. The man learns the doctor contracted an illness almost 20 years ago that forces him to keep his room very cold. After the machine stops working, we learn the horrible truth. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my favorite Lovecraft stories gets a heartfelt adaptation, that may lack in budget, but makes up for with care. Jack Donner turns in a fine performance as the good doctor, living alone in his frigid room. The film isn't flashy at all. But again, for a small budget, independent film, it is well done. Better than many movies with studio backing. And certainly a better adaptation of Lovecraft than you usually get. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The title feature is a largely faithful adaptation of a Lovecraft story, and because it lacks much action will only be appreciated by genre fans. Cool Air is almost entirely a conversation between Randolph Carter and Dr. Munoz, the latter played perfectly by Jack Donner. The film makers here have also lefy Lovecraft's xenophobia unvarnished, from his repulsion at a Sicilian landlady to the horror that lurks behind the seemingly noble Munoz. If you like a good scary story told around a campfire, Cool Air may be just the thing. There are several other short features based to varying degrees on HP Lovecraft's works. None are particularly good, being the stuff that's used to fill in time at film festivals. The best of this group is an amateurish but mildly interesting to-the-letter cover of the story Nyarlathotep. "An Imperfect Solution" is based on "Herbert West: Re-animator" and manages to suck any bit of fun out of the story. "The Hound" is a real dog, and "The Hapless Antiquarian" seems to have more to do with some sort of desire to be Edward Gorey than it does with Lovecraft, though whomever made it at least proved that he knew the alphabet. Don't waste time on the extras in this collection. Check out the excellent Cool Air and let the rest eternal lie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Cool Air feels like an old horror film because of its usage of Black and White film and its barely post-Victorian sets and costumes. Cool Air is a faithful, methodical adaptation of Lovecraft's short story. As other reviewers have noted, those who expect a modern horror film will most likely be disappointed. Like Lovecraft's story, Cool Air slowly builds its aura of eeriness and suspense. While not quite on a par with the truly brilliant, modern, silent version of "The Call of Cthulhu," Cool Air is a solid, entertaining, and stylish Lovecraft adaptation that will most likely please fans of the fiction.
