Santa C When I saw an '80s comedy I had never heard of, I was waiting for it to be a bust. But this movie had great writing, a great cast, and a clever storyline! Dan Aykroyd is at his finest! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review steve d With this cast it should have been funny. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Walter Matthau is so great in this as a fraud priest with trust issues. His character Becker is introduced as a street preacher working for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Plants" while he rants about having a tape of ivy screaming. He truly has all the great lines in this, as at one point Becker says, "I hope they have cable. I won't be able to watch regular TV without drugs." With scenes of Matthau dripping whipped cream from his droopy dog face and him sucking the jam out of donuts--it's all the messy comedy he does so well. He is the most beautiful ugly man the screen ever saw. Donna Dixon is often braless in this which made me wonder how many great scientists of the psychiatric arts were consulted to create this very serious role. Good thing she married her leading man (and mental patient). Chevy Chase makes a brief cameo in an ad for "Mentor Condoms" which is funny yet oddly placed in a scene where other dialogue is occurring and it all audibly clashes, probably like his time on SNL...and Community... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Mildly funny flic with some great actors given a so-so script. I always like to watch Dan Aykroyd and specially so when he is letting his maniacal side shine. He stars in this movie without his normal SNL sidekicks and gives a decent hour and a half of entertainment as the films star. Along with the great Walter Matthau it is a ok watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Not sure what all the complaining is about by the critics. Ok, I understand they wanted more of Charles Grodin, I understand they felt there was too much Walter Matthau, I understand they felt the movie had more promise, but most movies have that element, so who cares, because this movie worked out to fit the theme perfectly - that psychiatrists are actually the crazy ones and the geniuses are the outsiders (Matthau and Aykroyd), sometimes even institutionalized. The one long scene with Aykroyd on the radio was a tad better than any scene Robin Williams did in Good Morning Vietnam, and I'm a Robin Williams fan, so much credit to Aykroyd here. Aykroyd throughout the movie plays the perfect bugs bunny type hero, outsmarting everyone with his antics, except for Matthau, and eventually Dixon, who both know his game, so Aykroyd has to overcome these additional obstacles with extra craftiness. Some very original comedy scenes and script writing in this movie makes it very enjoyable. It's certainly not predictable, making this comedy an adventure ride from start to finish. Very few dull moments to worry about in this one because it just keeps moving, so another reason I can't understand the criticism. All actors played their parts very well, without having to overdo the comedy like many slapstick comedies often do, making this movie appear more realistic in it's own reality, and not too slapstick like many other big Hollywood comedies. The chemistry simply works too well in this movie, so people giving this a mediocre rating must be the anti-hero bugs bunny critics who could care less about Aykroyd's great manipulations and schemes... well, too bad for them for being negative during a very entertaining and funny movie.
