Audience Member Parigi: una giovane donna Caroline (Jane Birkin) decide di raggiungere i genitori in un piccolo paese della Costa Azzurra dove il padre Tony "Daddy" (Dirk Bogarde) passa la convalescenza dopo un intervento chirurgico. Daddy è un inglese ironico abituato ad una vita mondana e l'operazione al cuore ne ha mitigato lo spirito ma non lo huomour di cui è spesso amorevolmente "vittima" Miche (Odette Laure). Miche, al contrario, è metodica, taciturna e mal sopporta la poca disposizione del marito alle regole della degenza. Al suo arrivo Caroline media tra la determinazione di Miche a proibire a Tony di bere e la possibilità di lasciare al padre quei pochi piaceri che la vita gli ha lasciato. Durante il soggiorno Caroline ha modo di approfondire la conoscenza del padre, una figura a lei distante fin da bambina che le causa una sottile ed intima sofferenza. Sofferenza che si manifesta quando il padre incomincia a ricordare malinconicamente il passato fatto di viggi in tutto il mondo, le feste, i cocktail, tutto quello da bambina li teneva lontani: "Prima dei vent'anni, non ho alcun ricordo di te..." ammette. Tony confida anche che il suo rapporto con Miche nel tempo s'è deteriorato, manifestato da una semplice e apparentemente banale esempio: quando si fa sera Miche mi dice "Vai a letto", mentre un tempo usava dire "Vieni a letto". La compagnia reciproca diventa una delicata intesa fatta di piccole (These Foolish Things), di malinconici silenzi e parole pudicamente sussurrate. Poiché la gravità della malattia diventa più chiara Caroline decide di concedere a Tony una gita a Cannes e qui, durante una conversazione fatta ancora di ricordi passati sulla "bella vita" di Tony, Caroline manifesta la sua rabbia verso di padre: "Non mi interessa la tua bella vita! E 'stata una bella, egoista vita!". Caroline decide di tornare a Parigi per terminare la sceneggiature di un film e rivedere il figlio, ma al rientro riceve la notizia della morte di "Daddy": sgomenta, si perderà nella folla del metro' e dei propri recenti ricordi, nel tentativo di raggiungere "Daddy"... I was quite surprised to find that it did not receive its deserved attention at the major festivals. It does not take away from it in the least, it remains among the best and most wholly honest portrayals of human longing and suffering that I have seen in the last few years (that it came out in '91, perhaps a damning critique of today's cinema, but more likely a testament to the power of the film itself). It haunted me with its power, realism. That it did so without any of the usual sentimental flirtations, or major gestures, is a credit to Tavernier and his actors. Such is the case that the pain is made honest and apparent to the viewer without their ever once realizing they are watching a mere construction. I suppose, like any great work of art, it becomes at once a penetration and revelation of life, not its cheapened imitation. Highly recommended. C'est très étonnant de se rendre compte à quel point c'est dénué de tout ces artifice dramatiques et non-réalistes qui sont pourtant indispensables à ce qu'un un film soit accepté par le grand public. The relationship between the ascerbic and yet frightened father and the estranged daughter (Jane Birkin) is truly moving - an account of unspoken love and repressed emotion.
