What to Know

Critics Consensus

Damsel has an appealing action hero in Millie Bobby Brown, whose gutsy performance is often enough to balance the scales against the film's underpowered story and occasionally unconvincing effects.

Audience Says

Damsel is a decently made fantasy film and Millie Bobby Brown does well in the title role, although it's easy to tell where the story's going and the CGI isn't great.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I’ve admittedly watched Damsel twice, so it’s obvious that, flaws and all, the film put a big enough smile on my face that I had no problem sitting down for an almost immediate second look. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2024 Full Review Nell Minow RogerEbert.com Even on the smaller screen, though, the fresh, female-led take on the traditional tale, including a bit of a sisterhood-is-powerful twist near the end, makes it worth a watch. Rated: 3/4 Mar 9, 2024 Full Review David Opie Empire Magazine Too childish and shallow for adults, yet too brutal and gory for kids, this is one Damsel that really does need saving, after all. Rated: 2/5 Mar 9, 2024 Full Review Jeanine T. Abraham VisAbleBlackwoman (Medium) Netflix’s Damsel is an adventure that feels about as exciting as watching paint dry on a medieval castle wall. This film is a perfect example of a story that promises much but delivers little. Rated: 1/4 Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Sameen Amer The News International (Pakistan) All in all, Damsel is too corny to really connect with viewers who have seen other movies explore similar ideas but with more nuance or at least woven into more exciting tales. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net A handsomely produced mini-epic, with a good idea and a great cast, that is neither here nor there in execution. Kevin E Damsel is a pretty good watch. Really good for a Netflix production. Didn't see the "Girl Boss" aspect, but more a surviver quest. Story is solid once you get through the slow moving plot build, because if you watch the trailer you kinda know what's going to happen. Then the movie steps on the gas and doesn't stop until the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review landongameon n Oh my goodness, Girl Boss fever dream, this is all....so .... familiar... literally couldn't get through 15 minutes of this recycled bile..It was like watching an episode of the whatever podcast where the 95 pound, 4 foot 9 women swears she can take out the 6'1" 180 pound man sitting across the way... There is fantasy and then the utterly ridiculous. Again horribly written male characters and a Chat GPT script criminally wastes Ray Winstone...God help me?? When is this drivel going to end!!!???? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Mena G It started of ok but the ending felt so contrived and cringey. Not sure why the dragon would want to hang with her after harbouring a major grudge over generations. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review matthias s I was really looking forward to *Damsel*—I’m a sucker for fantasy stories with stunning visuals and medieval vibes. The dragon? Absolute highlight, no question. But everything else? Not so much. Millie Bobby Brown feels totally miscast here. Her acting is fine, but she doesn’t sell the medieval princess thing at all. And don’t even get me started on the fake nails—how does someone trapped in a cave keep ending up with perfect manicures? It’s distracting and downright weird. The story had so much potential—a revenge plot in a beautiful fantasy world sounds epic, right? But instead, we’re stuck with Millie talking to herself in a dark, dull cave for most of the movie. It’s predictable, the pacing drags, and whatever magic the film might’ve had gets buried under bad execution. There’s a hidden gem of a story in there somewhere, but sadly, *Damsel* just doesn’t deliver. It's a slow start but it ends perfectly. Pretty predictable but holds your attention. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
