Alexandre (Vincent Perez) has been through the cycle of seeing the initial passion in romantic encounters burn off and having the relationship become routine and boring. He thinks that this happens for two reasons: the courtship and wooing dance ends, and mere sex enters the picture. He is determined to prevent this cycle from happening with his latest love-interest, a sexy young woman named Fanfan (Sophie Marceau).

An engaged man who believes that long-term relationships, particularly marriage, inevitably destroy the romance that he craves decides to win the affection of a pretty acrobat and never share physical intimacy. This French romantic fantasy blossoms with lots of charm, it's impossible not to love Sophie Marceau as the whimsical Fanfan. Alexandre on the other hand gives new meaning to the word douche, which is impressive because the French invented it. Not only is he screwing over his gorgeous fiancée, but he strings Fanfan along without regard for her emotions - or her sanity. If you wanted to be near someone, but stay at a distance, what is the perviest thing you could think of to do? That's right, secretly rent the apartment next to her and replace her wall-length mirror with a one-way mirror when she next goes out of town. But if you're willing to suspend reality, this leads to a couple wonderful scenes back to back with Fanfan first posing in her bubble bath and then her and Alexandre dancing to swing music on opposite sides of the mirror. The scene where they travel back in time to 1813 Vienna on a movie set is equally magical. If it was not for Alexandre and his hang-ups I would give an even higher rating as they demonstrate a real onscreen chemistry together.

My rating is a little warped as I have rated some mediocre films at 3, but this is a little better this is a delightful romantic comedy, not great, but interesting, would not be a total waste of your time if you see it while having dinner

well, 3 stars for Sophie only...
You know, the so-called French romance is as hypocritic as the so-called American freedom/human rights.
Why? The Americans think they have freedom/human rights and for those in different environment who can't afford such things or might live better just without it, it is Americans' duty to impose those upon these miserable "people". They forget the "happiness" they force others to accept is actually the cause of more misfortunes. They preach their ideal images in all their media and criticize those even if they don't know others' customs. As pointed out in Kubrick's film Dr. Strangelove, even the modern democracy might cause unbelievable tragedies to human races. The Americans would rather enforce their own ideas about the world than think how to improve others' lives with a method from the opponent culture.
The "French" romanace is no less ill-logical (not illogical in this case) than American freedom. Take this film for example. You may think, wow, it is a wonderful idea to love someone without sexual relationship... even when Alex has his own fiance. He can imprudently respond to furious Laure when she sees him with topless Fanfan. Oh, yeah, leaving his own fiance lonely in the night and flurting with another young girl all day, that's great! Why? The French would tell the people in the world, "Il s'agit d'amour." Yes, but why fuck Laudre? Alex loved her, right? Why not fuck her later? Did she do anything wrong? Yeah, maybe, a little dumb... but does Alex even bother trying to save their relationship? No, not a word. He says he loves Fanfan, and he just wants flurting, even when Fanfan refuses his sick games. Never say that's love, which really insults the word. It is simply selfishness.
