Master Splinter
Greatest Kung Fu movie ever made. It got so much play on the cable stations back in the day, it became a cult classic. A true Shaw Brothers masterpiece. Good plot, good action and amazing martial art skills. It was way before CGI and shacky cam fight scenes, when the actors actually had to have martial talent.

What a great premise, for a dying master to send his final student on a mission that holds little context and no clue as to who is good or evil of these 5 experts. Its ripe for a remake which under the right direction would be a huge hit. One of the better old school kung fu films. 4/5

Choppy and shoddy effects as well as poorly translated and dubbed dialogue holds it back from being truly epic but the choreography is beyond impressive and its lore surpasses its own presentation. While the concepts could, done correctly be far superior in a modern adaptation; Five Deadly Venoms has its own vintage charm to it. Its own imagination and excitement in its material is contagious even if it is at times corny. Its energy makes you feel like a kid making up stories with your toys and smashing them into each other. A film that should be celebrated for what it succeeded in and appreciated for its flaws. While its clear that not everyone can find enjoyment in this film, those who enjoy the classics of the martial arts genre will always cherish it for being a certified classic.

1001 movies to see before you die. There's something about poor dubbing that leaves you slightly confused and amused at the same time. Fortunately, it was combined with some good choreographed martial arts to make this entertaining. Was it better than others? Drunken Master, Fist of Legend or Enter the Dragon? No, but it was good and had an interesting premise / 5 different styles. It was on Pluto.

Dude, you're literally called the Poison Clan. Did you think these guys were learning kung fu to become bakers?
As far as I'm concerned, the crappy English dubs of old school martial arts movies are the official versions, it's just an integral part of their identity. A cult classic through and through, with dodgy effects, strange plotlines, and costumes that appear to be sourced from the laundry basket of a Village People tribute band, The Five Venoms won't be premiering at Cannes anytime soon but it is a massively enjoyable piece of guilty pleasure entertainment. Unique in its genre for seeming to legitimately dislike kung fu - the plot is bizarrely focused on its convoluted network of orchestrated killings, courtroom scenes, bribery, and treasure hunting; minus a single ensemble fight scene at the end, there is relatively little in the way of stylish punches being thrown, and that's a bit hard to come to terms with at times, but it forces you to embrace the goofiness of the script. Shoot those massively overexaggerated responses to fake punches straight into my veins. (3.5/5)
