Critics Consensus

As lumbering and bereft of conscious thought as its unstoppable star, Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood finds the franchise in desperate need of the title ingredient.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune The filmmakers have mastered the blood but not the tedium of all of the predictable killings. Nor have they eliminated the '"hate-women" subtext to the entire series of films. Rated: 1/4 Dec 6, 2018 Full Review Austin Chronicle Rated: 0/5 Sep 3, 2011 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine The anxieties suffered by Tina throughout the film are well thought-out by the franchise's typically one-dimensional standards. Rated: 2/4 Sep 25, 2004 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Others may be disappointed at another missed opportunity to revive a franchise that really feels like it's drowning at this point. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The seventh installment is better than expected, because it reserves the final duel between protagonists...something akin to Carrie vs. Jason. Nick O The biggest, scariest Jason yet gets a run for his money when he goes after Tina the telekinetic teenager. We didn’t know we needed it, but we’re glad we got it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review Marsh X Unfortunately wasn't able to finish this in one sitting since the rainfall was bad yesterday and constantly interrupting the signal, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a pretty decent movie, wasn't expecting anyone else with supernatural powers to be in this franchise so that was a surprise, the way Tina uses her telekinetic abilities near the end I thought was creative and enjoyable to watch, not my favourite movie of the bunch but it's probably around the same level as part 4 or slightly worse. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Todd B A telekinesis female that's the center of the story. Centered around the mom and her shrink questioning what her relationship with her father would be like if he lived, until Jason confronts him. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review John R Wasn't the biggest fan of the telekinesis girl plot but it was cool Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review John G This was something different than the usual slasher fare but still maintained the feel and the fun of the Friday the 13th franchise. It has since become a cult classic and definitely entertains. The director, coming from a special effects background took great care in the design of Jason and included every injury Jason had sustained in the films prior to part 7. Jason looks scary and Kane Hodde embodies the character better than anyone before him. He adds something visceral to jason and he doesn't disappoint. A fun blood-soaked horror film with a great finale. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Logan R This was the first in the series I ever watched. The fact Jason is depicted with all previous film injuries is fantastic. The creepy voice over flash back at the beginning is awesome. It always got me so excited to begin the movie and as it was the first Friday I watched as a kid it really helped me grasp what was going on. This is a good one, with some weird 80’s psych powers thrown in! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
