Critics Consensus

Josh Brolin gives it his best shot, but he can't keep the short, unfocused Jonah Hex from collapsing on the screen. Read critic reviews

Nothing special on screen here, Some ok action scenes but that's it, Same old story, Very short but it started to drag in parts, Very predictable and just a plain lazy excuse of a film, I can see why it bombed at the box office.

Based on a DC comic, Jonah Hex is a supernatural western packed with action. Rogue bounty hunter Jonah Hex is conscripted by the Union Army to help stop a former Confederate general bent on seeking revenge. Starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and Michael Fassbender, the casting is fairly decent; however Fox's role is completely superfluous. Hex makes for an interesting character, but most of the film is filled with supernatural and futuristic elements that just don't work. The script's also problematic, and is full of cliches and tropes. Yet even with all its junk, Jonah Hex delivers some strong action sequences and is entertaining.

I'm giving Jonah Hex a negative review on the basis that there are various problems with the film that stick out like a bulging sore thumb, but that's not to say that I didn't enjoy certain aspects of the film, so i'll start with the problems. Firstly, the title character can never seem to justify his horribly indecent actions in the film, we are told that he killed the supposedly antagonistic character's son, and for some reason it's never fully expained why we should root for him. Secondly, it stars Josh Brolin, and I was very excited about seeing him in this, if there's one actor currently working in cinema today that can play cowboys and anti-hero's in Western's, it's him. However his above average performance in Jonah Hex is not the outstanding performance we saw in True Grit or No Country For Old Men, it is a very good performance i'll add, but it can't hold the film together on it's own. A lot of scenes are unintentionally laughable, and John Malkovich is hilariously miscast as the bad guy. On the other hand unlike the people who've taken their time to attack this movie and properly go to town on it, I quite enjoyed things in it. Josh Brolin is very engaging and the main character himself is interesting, the action sequences are decent enough, the steampunk settings are fun to look at, and it appears that the costume design and special effects were put together carefully, and for popcorn entertainment, I think it's fine. But it's nothing more than fine, it's cheap and it's got Megan Fox playing the regular Megan Fox role, but looking quite bored executing it, and the story collapses eventually, but if your someone who watches a lot of films, believe me, you've seen a lot worse.
