Audience Member Based on my favorite novel of all times "Dieu et nous seuls pouvons" from Michel Folco, here comes the tale of Justinien Trouvé, or Pibrac, first executionner of his dynasty. The first part of the movie is pretty darn good, it's almost word by word by the book, but the second part is pure invention from the director and is very poor. Though there are some little mistakes and some exagerations of facts. For instance, in the book, Pierre Galine, the cook, slaughters baby Desire and his wet nurse and feeds the baby to it's parents. But in the book, he turns out to be a serial murderer that slaughters a whole village. But besides that (which is enough) the fist part is absolutely delightfull! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Inspired by the book of Michel Folco "Dieu et nous seul pouvons" (God and just us can) from the motto of the family of executioners. In a remote region of XVII century France, Justinien Trouvé (Justin the foundling) is abandonned at a monastery as baby after his nose was bitten off. As a young men he ends up in jail destined for the gallows. The town where he is incarcerated lost its executioner, a job no one wants because it means the assured loss of one's immortal soul and the life of an outcast. Justinien takes the job... There is a fabulous scene where a tanner explains his long string of murders to his judges while suspended from a spinning wheel above a round table at which his judges are seated. A master peace of dark humor. A great movie unlucky in its release caused it to comme out virtually unnoticed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
