Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the most amazing movies i've ever seen. It is pure genius on many levels. An ultimate tragicomedy that is simultaneously a movie of magic realism, it is a mind-blowing yin-yang movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member ummm is this movie based on a book? I think it's not that great even though it's gotten an award. Everything is not clear.. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member On her wedding day, sixteen-year-old Lamia crosses the barriers of barbed-wire that separate her house from her cousin's, in a zone under Israeli occupation. She joins her husband, whom she had never met before, leaving her family and her kite behind. She rejects her husband and slowly falls in love with the soldier who had been keeping her under surveillance since her arrival. It seems the kite crossed the sea of borders and obstacles between the lebanese girl and the israeli soldier. The film also depicts the relaities and every day life of members of same families and villages separated by buffer zones and barbed wire. They communicate with loudspeakers, excahnge brides and groums, bodies of their dead across the surveilled area! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member For once, I try to write a movie review that does not make me sound shallow. There are typos in this. I don't have time to find them. Before we saw the movie, my sister and I were trying to guess why the movie was called The Kite, but we really had no idea. I thought it might have something kite cutting since that seems to be a more widespread sport than I had previously realized, but I couldn't imagine what significance it would have on the plot. Then the movie started, and BAM! There's a kite. I said to my sister, "well, that answers that question." I like how the movie was framed with image of the barbed wire fence, first as something that Lamia can barely touch without hurting herself, and then as something she can just walk through without having to touch. But the movie isn't called The Fence. If I remember correctly, the actual kite is not at the end of the movie, but figurative and symbolically it obviously is. My favorite thing about the movie was the one woman with the bullhorn who kept going on about the toboggan slide. I love her, I want to be related to her, and they should make a whole movie about her because I would definitely watch it. Many of the comic moments that my sister mentioned stem from the adults' comments to one another, while the scenes with Lamia were more serious. I was personally more interested in the juxtaposition of the loud and the quiet. "Strong rebellion and soft innocence" is a good way to describe Lamia, but even in her rebellion she was very quiet. Many of her scenes were silent, time was slowed down. And then you have these grown woman yelling across the border at each other with megaphones, without even stopping to take a breath. It's hilarious, but it's also an interesting dynamic, and I think a illustration of the cultural difference as well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A simple plot, yet effectively points out the absurdity of dividing families, and love, with barbed wire and mines.
