Critics Consensus

Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson have comedic chemistry; unfortunately, Let's Be Cops fails to do anything with it.

Stephen Romei The Australian At this point Let's Be Cops loses much of its humour and starts looking like a film Liam Neeson will turn up in any time soon. That's a pity because the first half, about two doofuses playing police, is funny and occasionally sharp. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 14, 2014 Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) The depressingly putrid level of mainstream Hollywood comedy these days is on display in LET'S BE COPS. Rated: 1/5 Nov 11, 2014 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The chillingly gung-ho darkness that Johnson lends his comic riffs would be the story, if only the director, Luke Greenfield, didn't play the movie solely for laughs, which are few and far between. Sep 22, 2014 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The high energy screwball tone of the first hour makes way for a low-rent looking Bad Boys homage in the final half-hour, becoming the very kind of movie it attempted to satirize in the first place. Rated: 2/5 Feb 1, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Ends up being a mostly unfunny comedy about characters we don't particularly care about in a situation that doesn't really matter. Rated: 1.5/4.0 Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Patrick Taylor One Room With A View While not devoid of humorous moments, Let's Be Cops falls woefully short of the comedic heights of this year's 22 Jump Street. Огнян А I had a very good time with this one. It's not sertianly great but I really liked it and don't think it deserves such a slow rating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Rare T I think people who rate this movie badly are just pretending to hate it lest they get perceived as having bad taste. But what’s wrong with Let’s Be Cops? In other words, it may not pass the high standards that constitute a good motion picture, but it’s great at what it is. What else would one expect from a title like that? I for one did not expect anything different, and thus was not disappointed. It was the typical commercial action comedy with cops in it. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It works and it succeeds in being funny and enjoyable, and that’s what matters. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Trevor B Let's Be Cops was pretty good, but very dragged out!!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD. I didn't think it was as bad as the critics said. I thought the film started very well. We get to meet Ryan and Justin, find out who they are and join them as they discover what it would be like pretending to be police officers. It's all good fun, with plenty of buddy comedy to keep things light. Where I think the film goes wrong is when Ryan starts to get serious and embarks on an investigation. Ryan comes accross as being obsessed, and this is where the film looses it's charm. The rest of it gets more and more extreme until it becomes completely reduculous and unbelievable. If the initial fun could have been contained within the story with a happy ending I think it would have been a good movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Willie V Let's Be Cops just gives off the vibe of a classic comedy, made to just lay back and relax for an entertaining experience. The charm of Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. works well and it manages to overshadow the fact that certain plot points progress due to the secondary characters displaying a level of intelligence that you would find middle schoolers. ⁤While the storyline requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, if you're able to embrace that, the film offers a genuinely enjoyable time that goes by fast. ⁤⁤Overall, it's an easy and fun watch and the movie does not attempt to be anything more than just that. ⁤ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review ionelia u Even though it's been criticized for being a lame and not a funny movie, I really enjoyed watching it. I found it silly and funny! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
