Critics Consensus

Even with the force of a "classic" behind it, remake fever can't hold up the hollowness of this style-drenched Omen.

Namrata Joshi Outlook The film doesn't leave you with bad dreams. It just makes you wonder: what's the point watching this remake when DVDs of the original are at hand? Rated: 2/4 Jan 15, 2019 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Confirm[s] its pointlessness at every available turn. Rated: C Nov 13, 2006 Full Review Nigel Floyd Time Out A disastrously miscast remake of the 1976 horror classic, which retains the apocalyptic themes of David Seltzer's original script but renders them dull and fright-free. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry When it comes to The Omen, it feels as though more entertainment is to be had, rather than horror, yet finds its own layer of terror that extends beyond religion. Apr 8, 2023 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault "The Omen" was ridiculous in 1976 and it’s ridiculous now. Rated: D Sep 20, 2022 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News Director John Moore is very respectful to the original, with almost a shot-for-shot re-creation in this version. While I'll admit the film is well made, it lacks the tension and sense of doom that made the original work. Rated: C Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Justin T They took the word remake very literally and made a film almost identical in structure and content. The problem is that they didn’t make it any scarier and they actually made it less creepy. The child is too cute to be scary. The initial death had so many angles that it was no longer shocking, it was over-cut. The build-up to the decapitation is much worse but the money shot is pretty awesome. In the end this is a big waste of time and fans of the original (not me) will be disappointed. A pointless remake that actually lessens the impact of the original. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review James B I could whoop his ass which is what makes these films painful to watch still it is kind of on par with the original as this is more entertaining but the pacing is too fast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Shaun R The original is one of the greatest films ever made. If you are going to do a remake of the Omen, do it right. Capturing the creepiness of the original in 2006 was never going to happen. Comparing both Damien’s is like comparing Satan himself with Pippi Longstocking. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Sérgio N And yet another remake of the distant primordial era of diabolical horror from the golden years of the 70s/80s. And yet another fiasco. Despite one or two minimally reasonable details, almost nothing holds up. Not that the original is a heavenly masterpiece, but at least it's dense, and has soul (!). The attempt to modernize the narrative and obviously with the advantage of modern visual effects is valid, but I believe it's almost impossible to capture the essence and impact of the original, regardless of the approach. The devil boy is completely boring (and as they rightly mentioned, he looks like Denis the Pepper); Liev Sabretooth Schreiber gave a different touch, but even so, it was not enough, as well as the great Julia Stiles who also stands out within the possible. John Moore (V) deserves at least a mention for his courage, because playing gems like this is not for everyone, since the chance of getting burned (as was practically the case) is huge. It was ahead of few things, but Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne and A Good Day to Die Hard stand out. I only recommend it to those who really have nothing better at their disposal and are really crazy about franchises and high-quality trash bombs. My ratings for this infamous franchise so far: 9 - The Omen (1976) 7 - The Final Conflict (1981) 6 - The Omen (2006) 6 - Damien: Omen II (1978) 1 - Omen IV: The Awakening (1991) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Rami A This is an unfaithful remake of the 1976 film. It adds little to the film and tells the story is a boring way possible. These actors are talking like they're a block of wood, nobody cares for each other and the dialogue is bad. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Tiisetso M 18 years later and this movie is still classical garbage, which violently occupies my thoughts. I hated it to the point that I started to fall in love with its captivating plot, which can only be described as a beautifully written nonsensical creative masterpiece. The characters can not decide whether they want your sympathy or they want to evoke deep loathing for them. I am even anxious to watch the remake.
