When wealthy socialite Mimi Caraway (Madeleine Carroll) attends a musical and finds herself the subject of parody, she heads backstage to take up her beef with the show's star, Mona Merrick (Alice Faye), and primary writer, Gary Blake (Dick Powell). After they blow her off, Mimi decides to charm Gary, and, in the process, persuade him to portray her more flatteringly. Eventually, real romance blooms between them -- but so does a bitter rivalry with Mona, who also loves Gary.

Audience Member The best musical movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Ignore the sappy plot but enjoy the musical productions, especially Faye and the Ritz Brothers (who dance bare feet in one of them!). Faye's character stands out and her voice is beautiful. Apparently, Irving Berlin preferred her above anyone else to introduce his songs. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Colorful backstage musical with an amazing number of Irving Berlin hits: "Slumming on Park Avenue," "This Year's Kisses," "You're Laughing at Me," and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member The corns a mile high here and the print is in pretty terrible condition in parts but the songs are good and Cora Witherspoon scores strongly in her part. If you're watching this for Alice Faye though while she's okay in this she has been better and made far superior films to this. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Sweet musical romance, great cast, especially Alice Faye. Great music, very light and entertaining. Good art direction. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Love the way they make fun of the elite. Wish that the ending was more like "Platinum Blonde" though.
