Critics Consensus

Operation Finale is well-intentioned, well-acted, and overall entertaining, even if the depth and complexity of the real-life events depicted can get a little lost in their dramatization.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Well-intentioned, handsome, and lifeless. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Daniel Gallant Time Out Despite its engaging performances, this real-life story about Israel's hunt for a war criminal moves through rote plot points with uninventive efficiency. Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) When a movie features Ben Kingsley, in a hefty Ben Kingsley role, doing what Ben Kingsley does best, that's probably good enough in itself. Rated: 4/5 Oct 4, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The film’s slow boil may push away those looking for a snappier or more action-oriented thriller. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Director Chris Weitz goes the historically true story route with Operation Finale, a mildly suspenseful mainstream film that suffers from being a bit too well-intentioned, wraps up too neatly, and the tension never heats up above a simmer. Amir S A fine historical film, recommended for viewing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/24 Full Review Damien K Very well acted, convincing treatment of historical data and, at times, tense and gripping. Even though we know the outcome, there are moments when it still feels as though it could all go horribly wrong. Ben Kingsley does a superb job of bringing to life the evil in Eichman's janus-faced personality, and Oscar Isaac does a similarly convincing job as Mossad agent Peter Malkin. In all, Operation Finale is a compelling reminder - if one was ever necessary - of why we need to remember the lessons of history. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Johannes S The acting in this portrayal of the Eichmann capture by Israeli agents is strong with Ben Kingsley's two-faced performance as Adolf Eichmann standing out in particular. The movie suffers by being a little slow throughout with a few overstretched scenes in my opinion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Chris H Too slow at some points, too fast in others, this is not a gripping watch, although if you're not familiar with the events you should watch this anyway. Kingsley is very good as the vile Eichmann, who pretends to have been a mere pencil pusher but whose arrogance spills over every now and then. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Judith D Excellent acting. Sir Ben Kingsley has always been one of my favorites. This is a story that needs to be told and told again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Chris M Superb acting. Great story. Though I can see how some might find it a bit "dry" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
