Critics Consensus

Passengers proves Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence work well together -- and that even their chemistry isn't enough to overcome a fatally flawed story.

Daniel N Wasn't expecting to like this but really enjoyed it. Great mix of sci-fi, drama and romance. Love Chris Pratt in anything he does and Jennifer Lawrence was smoking hot in this. Good movie to sit and watch with a girlfriend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Michael P One of the most misunderstood films of all time.. Passengers is, at its core, a fairytale. A “Hero’s Journey” unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. A tale where the hero actually becomes the villain and through self reflection, admonishment and seemingly forever rejection from his Princess, and ultimately receiving forgiveness is he finally redeemed. This movie, in my opinion, presents the greatest love story ever told. The set design is incredible. The cinematography is immaculate. The score is mesmerizing. The acting is superb. The direction is basically perfect. This is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review William S Passengers is a visually captivating film with strong lead performances, but its narrative choices and tonal inconsistencies limit its potential. It’s a compelling watch for fans of sci-fi and romance, but its execution leaves room for debate The visual design of the Avalon is a highlight, with breathtaking shots of space that immerse viewers in the vastness of the universe. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence share undeniable chemistry, anchoring the film with their performances. Lawrence, in particular, conveys a mix of charm and depth as Aurora navigates her anger, love, and ultimate acceptance of her predicament. The film's concept raises thought provoking questions about morality, isolation, and the human need for connection. I believe some will find this movie worth the watch especially if your in the mood for a romantic sci-fi. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Martin M The critics don't like it because any moral failure by a man is unforgivable, irredeemable. This is a very good film. Solitude, morality, redemption, forgiveness, and love are explored intelligently. The acting and cinematography are superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Blu B It's not bad and half decently made overall but it's got a major problem being the two parts that make this up are very flawed. (Being a Romance and a Sci-Fi thriller) For having three big names and getting the big budget treatment you'd think this would be loaded with action like a JJ Abrams movie. It's not at all. There is hardly any action in this and is much more idea/character driven than anything. That 's where this clashes and has mixed results. This is trying to be a twisted sort of romance and a Sci-Fi thriller that has an almost Star Trek like plot but it has trouble making the two work together and doesn't spend enough time fully developing either one. The uncovering what happened to the ship can feel clunky in it's writing like how the captain wakes up to move the plot forward, how they know how to repair the ship without him, and the whole hole in the ship feels very underwhelming. When I seen that I was like "Oh...that's it? hmm alright" The romance is very twisted and probably a bit more interesting than the ship story. How would you react with someone in that siutation and I can see the analogy for how we aren't chosen when were born and the circumstances we are given at birth mirroring the situation Auroa finds herself in. But the problem is it feels like it feels inconsequential to the saving the ship storyline and if anything it makes the story clunky to fit Auora in. Another issue is J.L. doesn't have the best chemistry with Pratt suprisngly. The film is stronger when Pratt is carrying this simliar to the Omega Man / I Am Legend. But even than it starts to meander. And when the romance kicks in it gets repetitive a bit seeing ehr do all the same stuff and go through the same thing Chris Pratt did. The direction is good though and does elevate this enough to almost make it work. The setting of the ship is pretty cool and original. The music also is a weird combo of what feels like 80's RomCom tracks and modern Sci-Fi which feels a little out of place also. In the end I wish it would've committed more to either the romance or the ship story. Maybe having Lawrence wake up with him at the start would've helped or just having Pratt discover and save the ship would've been better. I will say what is here is pretty original and almost works though. If your a fan of any actors in this, the director, or very unique Sci-Fi consider checking this out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Zach T Ultimate stalker movie. This guy basically robs this woman of her life, uses her for his own benefit, tricks her into falling in love with him after she develops a space version of Stockholm syndrome, and then we’re all made to think it’s ok for men to do that because it was “for her own good”. Obviously written by a chauvinistic male who thinks women are inferior to men and here for them to do what they want with. The whole Ai spaceship plot also has a ton of gaps in it and the directing was horrible. Chris Platt (who probably loves the whole “women are here to serve” plot) also acts like a C grade actor with his goofy “nerd boy next door who is actually a psycho killer” role that is just lame.
