Ryan P Pink flamingos by John Waters is a notable film in cult history and one that’s been targeted to a drag demographic featuring Divine, a notable drag queen. It’s one of many films you may have never heard of, to have influence over the current generation in the modern entertainment industry, whether they’re drag or not drag. For example, Ursula’s design from the Little Mermaid is based upon Divine. At the same time, the film is designed to push the limits on our sense of humanity, which is why it has such low ratings. It was intentionally designed for this, when Divine aims to be "The Filthiest Person Alive" while rivaling the film’s antagonist, Connie Marble. While the plot line of the film can easily be summarized, the paddening scenes in the film can not. There will be at least two scenes that will make you want to stop watching and throw up. I almost did on my first time watching and took a short break before finishing the film. I managed to finish it and felt somewhat satisfied that it was over, but the film felt like trauma and I couldn’t bear to eat without gagging unless I was starving. Overall, the film made its mark in the industry for what it’s known for and can compete with today’s films in horror. I know it’s supposed to be in the comedy genre as noted by website reviews, but based on the film's intentions and shock from these scenes, I would list it in the horror genre as well. For everything the film has put me through, I respectfully gave the film one star. I strongly do not recommend watching films to anyone and urge watching other films for whatever the reason may be, unless you have to for an assignment or a dare. Not to mention, it was a film that handed out Pink Flamingo branded barf bags while it was screening in theaters and one that John Waters didn’t want his own father to see. It’s possibly the reason why it’s not often recommended for others to watch either, who would want to put them through this? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review MaryAnn M. This movie stays with you. It’s fun Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/25 Full Review Daniel P It’s one of those movies that blows your mind when you’re watching it. Divine shows her talent and all her potential and makes feel to viewer something weird inside him. John Waters’s universe is so. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Peter M In one scene, a live chicken is brutally killed during a staged sex act. It’s not implied. It’s not simulated. It’s real. And it’s horrifying. They should be in jail for hurting that poor chicken and killing it by crushing it alive, crushing the chicken to death. On camera. WTF, and people are saying this garbage is cult classic? No it is just pure evil and nothing to celebrate, except to put the director in jail. It was pure trash. John Waters is depraved for torturing that poor chicken, in real life, for jokes. You are baseless human being. Movie is supposed to be fantasy not actually harm animals. Depraved. What I was not prepared for—and what I will never forget—was the real, senseless suffering of a helpless animal. There’s a particular kind of horror that sinks in when you see something truly innocent harmed—not in fiction, but in actuality. The chicken in that scene had no idea what was happening, no way to fight back, no voice, no choice. It suffered and died for the sake of a shock gag. That pain, that terror, that indifference from the people involved—none of it was art. It was cruelty. I’m not easily rattled by film. But this wasn’t about being offended. It was about witnessing harm that should never have happened—harm that speaks to a complete disregard for life. People talk about Pink Flamingos as if it’s subversive genius. But if subversion means turning a living being into a disposable prop, then maybe we need to rethink what kind of art we celebrate. This wasn’t boundary-pushing. It was a boundary breaking, with something voiceless crushed underfoot. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Stephen C Funny in 1 hour and 33 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $413,800.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Nick O How far can too far go? Well according to John Waters, pretty far! The King of Filth has blessed us with an unforgettable flick that is sure to upset generations of squares. Just be sure to shower after viewing.
