Grace Montgomery Common Sense Media Musical version is edgier, not as fun as animated movie. Rated: 3/5 Jul 8, 2014 Full Review Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews The good-natured show...has a winningly inclusive spirit, a fantastical appeal, and a Vaudevillian comic showmanship that evoke The Wizard of Oz (surely a conscious inspiration). [Blu-ray] Rated: 3/4 Oct 31, 2013 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis There are a few off-color lines, but those should fly right over the heads of youngsters who will be more intent on the costumes and stage action. In fact, I'd say that this musical will appeal mostly to families with younger children. Rated: 7/10 Oct 23, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Ash P As a fan of Shrek, the franchise is always okay even with oue bad, one best and a couple that were okay. As a musical fan, this one was possible. The songs are a hit or miss but at the least most were enjoyable to listen to. The acting was okay, especially Donkey and Farquad who are my favorites. The rest were okay though the accent from Shrek does rub off wrong but that's quite a nitpick that even others would say the same. A couple of settings felt off but the rest were well placed. Not shocked if no one was interested if they aren't into musicals. If you are though, I'd check this out and see what y'all think. 7/10. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Audience Member I absolutely love the musical. I was just recently in a stage version of the show, and I played Dragon. I love this movie so much, I do wish that they could’ve done the Dragon puppet better, and not be played by 3 different girls. But the show is absolutely memorable! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/23 Full Review Mason D definantly a master piece colors are fun songs are catchy and it doesn't have the charm of the original film but it has its own charm Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Audience Member This musical adaptation of Shrek actually sums up some Disney live-action remakes such as Beauty and the Beast & Aladdin Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Shrek the Musical hits more often than it misses but when it misses, it really misses. Here's the rundown: MISSES: The actual protagonist of the story gets the worst songs coming off as forgettable at best and painful at worst, a few funny lyrics notwithstanding. The actor's feigned Scottish accent making me really miss Mike Myers' legendary vocal performance doesn't help despite his normal acting actually being decent; this probably also contributes to how the lines lack the same comedic punch as in the movie. Granted, the other actors aren't trying to imitate the celebrities but when you're playing the eponymous title character, you have the misfortune of sticking out like a sore thumb. Though it was only Gingy I hated thanks to a voice so different from his movie one that it feels like I'm hearing a completely different character. Another miss is some of the questionable artistic decisions, such as revealing Fiona's curse right off the bat despite still being an in-universe twist ruining the surprise for anybody who knows nothing at all about the Shrek franchise and a jarring case of mood whiplash when you have the banished fairy tale creatures sing about revolting against Farquaad then the next scene is the aftermath of what people who've seen the movie know as the "Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah sequence". Some of the blame can be placed on the limitations of Broadway compared to the more freeing medium that is animation but not entirely. Finally, some stilted acting and line readings, especially during more emotionally intense moments. Oh, and the filmed version can sometimes veer into action-movie editing, affecting immersion within the, sadly utterly average, choreography. HITS: The songs I liked I really liked, Fiona's in particular. Despite the changes coming off as superfluous in the grand scheme of things, it remains faithful to the movie with some of the best jokes intact. It even keeps some of the more edgy jokes in the script. Impressive production values with great prosthetic work and costume design that successfully translates Shrek's world into live-action without looking creepy. The characters that aren't people in costumes are also wonderfully realized. Gingy being pretty damn good for an animatronic effect is about the nicest thing I can say about this version's poor imitation of him. Seriously, the Magic Mirror gets a perfectly fine voice that even sounds like the original at some points, what the hell? And finally, some legitimately funny lines that aren't limited to just those taken from the film script. FINAL THOUGHTS: Though the things I didn't like about it threatened to ruin the experience for me, I was ultimately glad I stuck with it and watched it in its entirety. If you don't like the musical, that's fine. Just don't go around yelling "it ruined my childhood". The original movie is still there and, memes aside, it still remains an animation classic. Shrek the Musical was something experimental for DreamWorks and it's ultimately up to the viewer as to whether it worked in the long run or not.
