What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Superman series bottoms with The Quest for Peace -- the action is boring, the special effects look cheaper, and none of the actors appear interested in where the plot's going.

Jay Scott Globe and Mail This one is a big, big disappointment. Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune "Superman IV" is a pathetic appendage to the series, a dull, shoddy film that makes the minimal 1950s TV series seem rife with production values by comparison. Rated: 1/4 May 5, 2014 Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times The overall effect is of a story atomized and dying before our eyes, collapsing into smashed pulp, ground down into big-budget Kryptonite ash. May 5, 2014 Full Review Brad Cook Flickering Myth Okay, I’ll come out and say it: the fourth one is better than the third, but only thanks to the return of Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Margot Kidder’s larger role as Lois Lane. Rated: 2/5 Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Scott Nash Three Movie Buffs The one thing this series always prided itself on was that "You will believe a man can fly.", but here you'll only believe that a man can be suspended in front of a green screen as it's obvious that far too often that's exactly what is happening. Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Jason Adams JoBlo's Movie Network SUPERMAN IV is the worst movie in the series by far, but it never had a chance. At least the third movie had the budget and the opportunity to be good. In some ways, that’s sadder. Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

David F What makes these old Superman films good are: 1. Christopher Reeve: he’s a great Superman, and does a really good job of toggling back and forth between the nerdy Clark Kent and the powerful Superman 2. NYC in the 1970s and 1980s, and this one has plenty of skyline shots and finally 3. Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. In some of these films he is able to shine and given a lot of screen time, and this is one of the ones where he’s a major character. This film benefits from those three things and even thought it’s a sequel and suffers from sequalitis, it is actually a pretty okay film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review John S My problem with Superman 4, is not that it's a terrible movie (which it is) but that is only marginally better or worse than the three films that preceded it. This rewatch has the whole series of films leaving me cynical, and actually excited to watch Superman Returns. Despite its faults it won't disappoint me like the first 4 films. Or so I'm hoping. I've been wrong about all the Christopher Reeve films. My nostalgia did not win out. They're all awful. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Stephen C Tasteless in just 1.5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Faiz D I spent the better part of yesterday watching the Superman movies. It was an interesting experience watching these movies in a series back to back. Although I'm not that big on Superman, as I'm more a fan of Batman, these movies were very much entertaining, and delivered good actions, some good comedic elements and plenty of thrills. Christopher Reeve was very effective as Clark Kent/Superman and will always be that character. No other reboot will ever fill his shoes. EVER. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Carnage David Z Ooof! Definitely the weakest movie of the Reeves Superman. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review r96 s 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' isn't one I'll be filing anywhere near 'good', though it is at least a minimal improvement on III and 'Supergirl'. It has a pleasantly short run time of just under 90 minutes and features a plot that I didn't find totally terrible. Christopher Reeve stars as Superman for the final time, to as decent effect as you'd expect. Gene Hackman makes a return as Lex Luthor, to my support - I think he's the one I'll remember most from these films, aside from the main guy obviously. It's not Hackman on top form, but still solid enough. Overall though, I didn't get the required entertainment. I do think it starts better than it finishes, the end noticeably drags. One big reason for that is the Nuclear Man character. Any time he appears, I was uninterested. The 'switching' in front of Lois Lane is also extremely repetitive by this point. A blessing for all involved that this era of Superman concluded here. Now to see what they did for 2006's 'Superman Returns', a movie I'm a little surprised didn't cross my path as a kid to be honest; as the Spiderman flicks from those years did. Maybe I'll find out why! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
