david l The Bat is a messy and silly silent movie that influenced the famous caped crusader a decade after its release. The humor is the highlight here as well as some very amusing characters, but the character count is overly high and there is too much dialogue here. The first half made great use of some German Expressionist touches, so it was a shame that the second half discarded those thrills and atmosphere so well established before. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A direct influence on Batman? So many similarities and a fun movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member The Dark Nights at the Old House.. A memorable and influential mix of horror and mystery--A fun suspense filled ride... The beginning of a new genre!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Not my favorite version, or the most enjoyable to be honest. The villain feels a bit silly, though is still interesting. The rest of the characters are fairly generic and bland, and the plot is slow and rather dull at points. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member SO this is the movie that inspired Bob Kane to create the Batman comics huh? Well Well! The story takes place in a spooky old mansion of mystery writer Mrs. Cornelia Van Gorder , where a number of innocent bystanders, chiseling crooks, murder suspects and cowering bystanders converge. When the police show up, everything seems to be under control -- and then The Bat strikes again! While I do give this horror mystery some credit and I am a fan of classic horror, it also has a decent story but this movie is incredibly average, there are no thrills and the movie ends more like a cliffhanger. The Bat (1926) gets a weak 5/10. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member www.flowersflix.com Like Atom Age Vampire, The Bat isnâ(TM)t really about a bat. Okay, there are âbatsâ? in the movie, and the villain is nicknamed the âBat,â? but heâ(TM)s really an odd cross between Freddy Krueger and The Shadow (he wears a dark stocking on his head and sports gloves with metal claws fastened to each finger). In any case, heâ(TM)s terrorizing the inhabitants of a mansion named âThe Oaks.â? A mystery/horror author named Cornelia van Gorderâ"sometimes appropriately referred to as Ms. Cornyâ"has leased the place for the summer in hopes of working on her latest story with at least some semblance of peace and quiet. The Bat, of course, has other plans. Much of this involves a hard to decipher back story focused on embezzlement, fraud, etc., but thatâ(TM)s neither here nor there. Weâ(TM)re checking out The Bat because we want to see if itâ(TM)s able to create some genuine scares, right? Iâ(TM)ll admit; it was likely edgy for its time, as the mention of âripped out throatsâ? and âmurderers stalking womenâ? certainly isnâ(TM)t fluffy fare (not even for a 21st century audience). That being said, the movie is extraordinarily hokey. It seems self aware to a measurable degree, but the fact that itâ(TM)s 80 minutes longâ"an excruciating run-time for horror flicks of this eraâ"doesnâ(TM)t help as we try not to nod off as one dull scene piles on top of another. Itâ(TM)s clear the writers were going for the âwhodunitâ?â"think Clueâ"caper feel that may have previously kept audiences balanced on their toes and chewing on nails, but I found the whole thing disappointingly uninteresting. Heck, thereâ(TM)s even a moment where it seems like the movie tries to throw viewers a curve ball in the form of âwas-the-whole-thing-a-story-or-did-it-really-happenâ? scenario, but, again, by the time youâ(TM)ve survived until the closing credits, you simply donâ(TM)t care anymore.
