Critics Consensus

The Romantics is visually accomplished, but director Galt Niederhoffer's adaptation of her own novel never finds the passion on the page or offers audiences a reason to invest in these limp love affairs.

Lucila A I knew people hate it this movie, but I love it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Ede. T A dreary, boring, chaotic waste of time. I only say through it to see the final choice in the end, but they never made it! The director just wanted us to suffer. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Audience Member It's not a perfect movie, nor even really a complete movie, but I don't hate The Romantics for some reason. I had first seen it back around 2014 and there was something about the movie that made me want to give it another shot — perhaps I'm interested in the "incestuous group of friends" trope. The abysmal RT (14/21) scores were surprising and I second guessed whether at only 95 mins it would still be a complete waste of time. Although a group of friends who calls themselves "The Romantics" because of a shared fondness of the romantic era is particularly pretentious — and the setting is a WASPy, water front dreamland — I still find the movie to be charming, even if none of the characters hold that trait themselves. I don't feel like listing all of the characters, but the film does have quite the cast for 2010. The best scene was the rehearsal dinner montage of awkward, funny, drunk, lame, etc. toasts. "We need to talk" right before the wedding was an eye-roll. Laura (Katie Holmes) and Tom's (Josh Duhamel) climactic convo also didn't possess the gravitas it thought it did. (I might be convincing myself of lowering my score as I write this.) The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. If it had 30 more mins, this probably would've been a good movie — that's a big "if" however. It did introduce me to the band Bedouin Soundclash back in 2014, so maybe that has something to do with it? Whatever. I kinda like it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Terribile. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Not only predictable in plot, the movie is hindered by pacing, a depressing mood caused by characters reminiscing about past hijinks as opposed to showing us them. I really had to wonder if Katie Holmes was making this for some past love. My biggest problem was that the two women are basically fighting for this loser, who shows little charisma and is frequently depressed, a great selling point! We never get a true interplay between the bride and the ex until just before the wedding, only verbal hints. Besides Holmes and the groom's relationship, this is the key conflict, so it is bewildering why so little attention is paid to it. Another problem is the friends just don't seem to have chemistry. Sure they can yell at each other in a car and do makeup together, but there's a lack of (non-sexual) intimacy, perhaps exacerbated by Holmes' frosty demeanour. It's hard to feel like there were years of friendship between all of them. I really don't buy Holmes as a writer. Perhaps if she had drunk too much during the rehearsal, her delivery would have been more convincing. All in all, the characters take themselves too seriously, with Ackerman being a lone exception, and maybe one of the few in this movie who were watchable. Agron was decent, but really had little to do. The only time I really related was when Paquin's character was telling off the groom: This movie makes you want to scream with it's childishness and inanity, but instead you move on with life, like an adult. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring! Plus the camera seems so shaky it could make you motion sick. Waste of time!
