Audience Member Our hero is fleeing his ex-gang, hoping to find someone he wronged while with the gang, when he helps a seemingly hapless stranger who ends up actually being a kung-fu master. The film is an interesting twist on the standard martial arts tale of revenge, when this time it is the perpetrator seeking out his victim to make amends. The fighting sequences are decent, though nothing up to the standards of The Venom Mob, but it is a film worth checking out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review don s In most kung fu movies, the story takes a back seat to the action. For the most part, that plays true here; however, the story is better than average and gives a plausible reason for all the battles. Can't really speak for the acting, as this is dubbed (badly, of course - just as you'd expect from a kung fu movie.from this era). I enjoyed watching this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sun Chung didnâ??t get the Shaw Brothersâ?? biggest budgets, but he always made the most of what he got, and The Avenging Eagle looks stunning with its perfectly-framed forest settings and the striking set design of the Eaglesâ?? headquarters. But one of the filmâ??s key strengths is the cast. Alexander Fu Sheng had an uncanny ability to go from supremely goofy to lean and deadly, and that ability is put to great use here. When we first meet him it looks like heâ??s going to be Ti Lungâ??s goofy sidekick ; then we see flashes of his lethal fighting style, and cracks start to appear in his amiable exterior. The gradual reveal of his true identity and motivations is perfectly carried out by the late star. Ku Feng is a memorable villain and never lets his awesome facial hair out-act him ; no small feat. But the film belongs to Ti Lung. Chi as a character is all shades of grey ; heâ??s a deadly assassin whoâ??s only ever known the cold act of killing, and when his eyes are opened and he experiences the warmth of love, his awakening is a gradual one, not some kind of overnight change for good. Even after swearing to never kill again, he murders a pregnant woman out of sheepish obedience to his master ; even after choosing to do good, glints of his old self show up : when Fu Sheng rescues him in the desert in the beginning of the film, he reciprocates by stealing his horse and water. When born and raised a murdering outlaw, you donâ??t just turn it off like that. All this is superbly conveyed by Ti Lung in what is one of the best performances in his long and legendary career, not to mention his fighting performance with the three-section staff he wields in the film is quite impressive. Tiâ??s eventual team-up with Fu Sheng is one of the most charismatic duos in the Shaw Brothers catalogue. The cast for the rest of the Eagles is populated with such distinguished martial arts supporting players as Wang Lung Mei, Dick Wei, Eddy Ko Hung and Yuen Bun, which means every fight is a delight. A remake of this film is in the plans : it has its work cut out for itself to match the star wattage, hard-hitting storytelling and visual mastery The Avenging Eagle displays. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member You return good with evil. Two men traveling across the Chinese countryside cross paths. One man has lost everything and is looking to die at the hands of the man responsible, and one is hell bent on a mission to obtain revenge on a gang leader that wronged him when he was a member of the gang leader's gang. The two men become friends, of sorts, and head towards the gang leader to hopefully achieve both of their goals. "There's going to be blood spilled." "Blood spilled? Whose blood?" Chung Sun, director of City War, The Master Strikes Back, Human Lanterns, Notorious Eight, To Kill a Mastermind, and The Kung Fu Instructor, delivers The Avenging Eagle. The storyline for this picture is very entertaining and fun to watch unfold. The action scenes are wonderful and the acting is as you'd expect for the genre. "I've looked around...this looks like a good place to bury your bodies." This was recently added to the Netflix queue and I had to add it to my wish list. I am a huge 5 Deadly Venoms fan and this seemed like a movie that would feel like one of theirs...it very much did. This is a must see for fans of the old school martial arts genre. "If I die it will be worthwhile." Grade: B Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Ti Lung is on the run from a ruthless gang of bandits he used to belong to. He encounters a mysterious drifter who helps him fight a group of the bandits. Soon they are travelling together, fighting off the bandits and plotting revenge on their leader. It soon becomes apparent that the drifter also has a very personal stake in this fight. Top notch martial arts action from the Shaw Brothers features a lot of fighting with a really dizzying array of odd weapons and an amusing, uneasy relationship between the two stars. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The story of two individuals that meet in the middle of nowhere and decide to defeat villians. They come in conflict with a group of villians known as The Eagles, an organization lead by the head eagle and his group of adoptees that he has brought up as thieves. I really don't know what to say about this production except that it is bad, bad bad. The choreography, the script and the scenography is just terrible. Not to mention the dubbing to english which doesn't help one bit. What is really sad, is that the story has more depth than most in this genre, and it is treated terribly and made into more of a rip off. Otherwise, I don't know what the director was thinking. Several times there are frozen screen shots from different angles which not only are unecessary, but they don't add anything in the form of visals or storytelling whatsoever. Now I can understand the cultural and symbolic value that a movie like this can have, but this just stunk and is more humorous than anything else. Sad because I am sure that it was not meant to be treated like that. Even when it was fresh. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
