In her 15th HBO documentary film, Alexandra Pelosi turns her camera on some of the people who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Through a series of candid interviews conducted over the last two years, Pelosi talks to several individuals charged with crimes for their participation in the unprecedented events of the day. Pelosi was inside the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, witnessing the events first-hand. She speaks with people who were there that day in the hopes of having open and unfiltered conversations about what brought them to Washington, D.C. from across the country and how their views may or may not have shifted since that fateful day. Pelosi seeks a better understanding of cultural and political views that have polarized the country without shying away from challenging topics and a surprisingly forthright set of conversations emerge despite the political divides.

Brian Lowry CNN.com The documentary provokes the dispiriting sense that while people with conflicting views can talk, when the gap’s this wide and the unwavering belief to disinformation this toxic, there’s almost no way to make them hear. Oct 17, 2023 Full Review Chris Vognar Rolling Stone There’s a lesson in The Insurrectionist Next Door about how people who do dumb and dangerous things, and might represent the country’s darkest impulses, are still people. Oct 17, 2023 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times In the end, as a document, it’s undeniable: The unvarnished human detail gives the film a life of its own that escapes any particular polemic or hope. Oct 17, 2023 Full Review Ricardo De Querol El Pais (Spain) Alexandra Pelosi demonstrates that a conversation is possible. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 1, 2023 Full Review Savina Petkova A Good Movie To Watch The Insurrectionist Next Door is colloquial, it's comedic tragedy with a hope to bridge the gap between two opposing political beliefs: a synecdoche for America as a whole. Rated: 7/10 Oct 29, 2023 Full Review Stephen Silver The SS Ben Hecht Pelosi keeps trying to humanize her subjects when really they’re at best in over their heads, and at worst, actively malevolent. Jacob B Just awful and cringe journalism regardless of what view you have on the subject. Its hard to watch. Hopefully Alexandria Pelosi never interviews anyone one ever again because she is truly horrible at it. Just to be clear I'm not conservative or sympathetic toward January 6th rioters. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Mike O The narrator of this doc is extremely bias because she is directly connected to a rep that was part of jan 6. The way she questions subjects of the doc and reacts to their answers with fake shock highlights that bias. This could have been a good doc but it should have been made by someone not connected to Jan 6. Because it's made by someone connected to Jan 6 it discredits what happened that day and will eventually fuel conspiracy theories that discredit what happened that day. All in all very disappointed and honestly frustrated by this doc Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Vivian R Very informative & interesting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Jessica B This really showed Pelosi's bias just as much as it showed the weird obsession of these people. She also did something that even the likes of CNN did not do in their special— she put allll of these people in the same basket. She put not only the WHOLE of those who favor trump alongside those who are in QAnon and those who stormed the capital, but she also even threw ALL conservatives in as well. The conversations she had with the man who served 8 months were SO CRINGE WORTHY and unhinged I barely got through it. It made her look incredibly ignorant, and like she had absolutely no people skills whatsoever. It also highlighted how dangerous HER views are just as well as these extremist. She is clearly the type that promotes a horribly toxic "us vs them" divide that is no more healthy than the mindset of these people. The guy who served 8 months said it well. While we can argue that trump had a lot to do with Jan 6th, at the end of the day, the actions of these people are THEIRS. They are responsible for it. They can't blame just trump, they can't blame all conservatives, they can't blame republicans. THEY CHOSE TO DO WHAT THEY DID. And OF COURSE they're not going to change their worldview overnight just because it backfired on themselves. Why would they? What does it say about PELOSI that she looks at ALL CONSERVATIVES as no different that Qanon, the proud boys, and those involved in Jan 6? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Craig L I agree with many of the reviews that she was very confrontational with the people she interviewed. She should have taken a more neutral interviewing style and let them talk about their experiences. When you throw accusations at people, whether if they are true or not, it'll put them on the defense. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review David F I really liked the way the filmmaker approached the making of this documentary. She was obviously a liberal but she didn't make the whole thing about partisanship. It really seemed as though both interviewer and interviewee made an honest attempt to be cordial and friendly with one another. I wish the rest of the country would use this as an example of how to get along with people of different political ideology. The subjects were very colorful and very interesting. Overall this program was insightful, informative, engaging, and actually pretty funny! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
