Audience Member Doll in the Dark also known as The Melancholy Fantastic is a slow paced horror, fantasy, drama based on the 5 stages of grief. Main character Melanie Crow (Amy Crowdis) lost her father in a car accident which sent her Mother into a state of depression and later lead to her suicide. This left Melanie alone and unable to process her grief. In turn she makes a doll figure that takes the place of her Mother which she talks to and cares for. As the movie progresses she constructs a new doll and imaginary friend, Dukken (Robyn Lord Taylor.) A.D. Calvo, Alejandro Daniel created a fantastic movie that was full of deeper meanings. The characters were really intriguing and likeable which made the movie even more of a success. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member i have never so quickly known how terrible a movie is gonna be until I saw this. Incredibly dry and boring Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review farah r If it's not the terrible acting, it's the terribly slow pace of this horrendous horror. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't know what to say...is not disturbing at all. Is not an horror film neither a thriller...is more of like a "movie of finding your inner self" I believe. Drama fits it well (for me at least looks more like DRAMA). Amy as Melanie was great (sometimes I felt she was ok). Melanie is this character that you don't feel pity for her at all. Her parents died and the only thing she believes in (coz somehow has her mother's spirit) is her DOLL (you may say "creepy"...I say she's crazy). She doesn't go out much either and if she does is only to the store and library. In the town there are other characters (the person in the store "Kenny" done well by Josh Caras), Geneva (the one in library aka "Mrs. Wiley"), and of course Robin Lord Taylor as "Dukken". Dukken's story is very nice indeed. Why? He becomes the 1st real friend of Melanie. He tries to understand what is happening to her (but can't say more. You need to see how his story ends). In general, is a nice ''indie'' film with nice story telling, editing and camara shots. The acting was great also only that a character like "Melanie" was honestly to BIG for Amy. Sometimes I was not convinced enough. The music score was lovely also (even if it's missing almost the whole movie). Anyway, if you like DOLLS, Robin Taylor and stories like this (I can tell this can work better on THEATRE or in ANIME/MANGA), I recommend it to you. If you don't like any of the things I have said before...don't. - December 2015 review (mega late). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
