Nick Allen RogerEbert.com Writer/director Alex Heller pulls off a dazzling tonal high-wire act for her directorial debut. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Teo Bugbee New York Times This lived-in quality to the filmmaking supports equally relaxed performances from both veteran and emerging actors, making for an even-keeled and easy viewing experience. Mar 2, 2023 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Achieves a degree of poignancy and depth within a distinctive sensibility you might call Midwestern Sardonic. Mar 2, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Flip Screen It’s why The Year Between fails in making a statement on comedy and mental illness: it’s simply too all over the place. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Nadine Whitney AWFJ.org For a debut film The Year Between is a gem, but beyond the fact it is Heller’s first feature, the movie stands on its own as an accomplished piece about how infuriating it can be to be mentally ill. Sep 6, 2023 Full Review Jim Laczkowski Director's Club A thoughtful examination on mental health that feels personal and compassionate. Not to mention the fact that the writer/director/star makes it relatable & real with a lot of sardonic, dry humor that culminates in a genuine portrayal of healing and growth Rated: 4/5 Apr 11, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Alec B Funny but never downplays the negative effects of mental illness (especially on loved ones). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review James M An intimate look at some of the dilemmas of bipolar disorder and how it affects the person with the disorder and the other people in their lives. Seasoned with some tastefully honest laughs Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/23 Full Review Roy V Such an incursion into enemy territory, bipolar disease. Alex Heller either has first-hand experience with the disease or did her homework very well. If I met her in person I'd probably be shocked one way or the other. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/03/23 Full Review Steph B Predictable, contrived writing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/25/23 Full Review Christine A Even if you have not experienced mental illness first hand you will find this story of a family stumbling through their challenges incredibly relatable. This film takes an approachable look at mental health. It's not dark but it's also not a big joke. You'll find yourself smiling and laughing at the mundane yet outrageous scenarios that play out between this Midwest family. If you are from the Midwest, this will feel so familiar. Highly recommend watching if you are looking for a heartfelt indie that will start a conversation! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/23 Full Review Liz M Alex Heller is incredible. She has such an incredible voice; funny, honest, heartwarming, brutal. I love this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
