Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism is a practice in patience, its plot slowly lurching to its reveal and climatic conclusion. And while not the first to be inspired by the spirit of Poe, it delivers chilling visuals, becoming an influence in its own right. Jack S Some stylish visuals can’t save this otherwise forgettable (and very gory) horror outing that’s also marred by a silly (and not very suspenseful) climax. However, Lee can perform this sort of role in his sleep, and he’s typically effective here. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review nick s Good effort went into this movie, especially sets. But it wasn't a classic. The actors were dubbed over, which never sounds great. I had a hard time being scared of an old geezer called Count Regular. The villains probably should have been a little more concealed in the shadows. In the end it started to feel like a Batman and Robin episode. And about as dangerous. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Blobbo X Above average of its type in it's time. Scary for very young kids. (Aka Blood of the Virgins) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review sean s As a kid in the early 1970s, I watched a ton of late night horror movies on TV. This is one of them. It has been entertaining rediscovering all these old movies now and then on cable. I recently watched this again and was knocked out by the atmosphere of it, color and sets. It has not bad photography with even a little humor. It was made back in 1967, so I took that into consideration when rating it. Oh yes, good old Christopher Lee is in it also. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I would give it a better score of 1.5 stars as a comedy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The Torture Chamber of Dr Sadism (1967) -- [5.5] -- Before he could attain eternal life by drinking the blood of thirteen virgins, Count Regula (Christopher Lee) is captured by the villagers, put in an iron maiden's mask, then drawn and quartered. But you can never keep a good Count down. Regula comes back thirty-five years later for a little revenge. "Dr Sadism" is Germany's attempt to cash in on the success of Britain's Hammer horror films, and to some extent, they succeed. The film is beautifully shot, the sets are nice, and the cast is attractive. There's an eerie carriage ride through a forest full of body parts, and director Harald Reinl uses real vultures and snakes to dress his castle sets. But the story resorts to imitation too many times, whether it's the Bava-esque opening or the Poe-like climax. The soundtrack is hard to bear. All the dialogue is badly dubbed and the music is atrociously inappropriate at times. Still, for B-horror movie fans, there's enough here to give a gander.
