What to Know

Critics Consensus

By eschewing traditional hagiography to instead delve deep into Billy Joel's tumultuous life with disarming candor, And So It Goes weaves a touching story fit for one of the Piano Man's ballads.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) ...this comprehensive documentary is a reminder that anyone with such a gargantuan career – over 150 million albums sold, a residency at Madison Square Garden that lasted 10 years – has an intriguing psychological set-up. Rated: 3/5 Aug 18, 2025 Full Review Jack Hamilton Slate And So It Goes is a disappointingly underwhelming music documentary. Clocking in at nearly five hours, it’s both indefensibly long and exasperatingly short on formal inventiveness. Aug 12, 2025 Full Review Christian Blauvelt IndieWire Like its subject, it isn’t about surfaces. Both Joel and the makers of “And So It Goes” understand that when you look beyond the surface, you can glimpse the soul. Rated: B+ Aug 12, 2025 Full Review John Stark Mac the Movie Guy Billy Joel: And So it Goes finds a familiar setup left behind by Pee Wee As Himself, and once again highlights a flawed but brilliant artist we don’t quite mention how much we appreciate their artistry. Play us a song, Piano Man. Just one more. Rated: 89/100 Aug 9, 2025 Full Review Pat Stacey Irish Independent It’s a compelling deep-dive into the singer’s life and 50-year career, exhaustive without ever becoming exhausting. Aug 4, 2025 Full Review Frank Wilkins Reel Reviews It's a musical journey worth taking, offering proof that the best art often comes from the most complicated lives. Albert F. I’m not in the know about a lot of things, but I’ve been a Billy Joel fan for a long time and never realized how little I knew about him. This film (in two parts) was long and deep. So many great interviews and so much footage old concerts and rehearsals. His life has been a roller-coaster ride. Amazing! Fascinating! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Tom B A perfect complete journey of Billy Joel’s life. With continued interviews with Joel, ex wives, ex band mates etc. it’s a complete work with all the perspectives you would care about. I’m glad they did it properly. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Andrew B. This could not have been done much better. Went from the very beginning of his career to present day. A lot I already knew was in there but also learned a lot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Tom D I grew up with Billy Joel as a Long Island kid. I would go see him in high school auditoriums and local bars! His music has always captivated me but after watching the documentary almost all his songs have a different meaning. He is a true American artist and his music has crossed generations! God bless you and your music and thanks for sharing! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Darcy G No denying Joel's talent. One of the greatest composers and musicians of our time. A true storyteller. However, it would have been nice to hear some accountability from him. When he said his current wife didn't care about him being Billy Joel or wasn't impressed by it. I admit, my eyes rolled. His music will last for decades to come and he truly is a showman. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Steve B I was really impressed with Billy as a person. Very straight forward and tells things as it was for him. Does not hold back with both the good and bad. I loved Christy Brinkley and how candid and you could tell how much she loved him and how painful the divorce was. Also great insight to his band members and how he wrote songs. I was very unaware of his plight and especially all those years with Elton. Fantastic 2 part documentary.
