Former nurse-turned-exotic-animal-broker Tonia Haddix spends her days caring for animals in captivity, referring to herself as the "Dolly Parton of chimps." However, her limitless love for one chimpanzee spins into a wild cat-and-mouse game with authorities and an animal rights group. Through the experiences of Tonia and other "chimp moms," "Chimp Crazy" is a series that reveals the bonds between owners and their highly intelligent great ape pets, as well as the risks to the welfare of the animals themselves.

Another uncomfortable trip down the exotic pet rabbit hole from Tiger King documentarian Eric Goode, Chimp Crazy will have viewers going bananas even when they have to watch through their fingers.

Kayleigh Donaldson TheWrap “Chimp Crazy” is far more focused on the real subject: the animals. Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Sam Adams Slate This is a series that isn’t meant to be wolfed down in one gulp and regretted the next morning. It’s made to be chewed on and lingered over, even if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com Funny but troubling; enraging at times but also somewhat empathetic to both the apes and the people loving them to death. Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Terrell Smith What To Watch They say lightning never strikes twice, but Chimp Crazy may be proof that it can, and with more precision, more ferocity and more perplexity than the first time. Sep 5, 2024 Full Review Joly Herman Common Sense Media It's a series that might leave viewers feeling a little slimy -- like watching a mudwrestling match between ideological foes. Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Alison Lanier Pajiba Come to Chimp Crazy for the absurdity and chaos, and stay for the absurdity, chaos, and surprising pathos of this, at times, literal circus. Audience Member I don't understand the bad reviews. I think they're letting their own hate for PETA cloud their judgment on what is an otherwise interesting story. The documentarian crew is clearly not condoning the actions of either party involved. However, in some cases (although not very often), PETA can be the "good guys". In this instance, I think that's the case. It doesn't quite capture the same magic of the Tiger King story, but that's ok. Still very much worth the watch and a very interesting story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Ivan F If you like shitty documentaries about horrible people doing terrible things to wild animals and the people attempting to protect said creatures then watch this. Personally, it nauseated me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Samantha N After watching the first few episodes of this show, It’s become very clear that PETA does not at all care about animals. Do you come away feeling that PETA did anything to help those chimps? Did they provide funds to help fix the enclosures, did they go on site to work with the owners to improve the conditions? No! They did none of that. All they did was spend thousands of dollars taking these chimps when they could have worked with the owners to make the habitats safer and healthier for them. Years spent tracking down these animals instead of actually working with the owners to provide funds and improve conditions. PETAs main mission is to destroy our connections with animals. They kill 60-70% of animals in their care compared to other kill shelters that only kill 15%. PETA does not care about animals at all and this documentary clearly displays their desperate desire to have control over who is in contact with animals. Remember, Hollywood threw those animals away. The people that took those chimps were trying to help them because no one else would. Where was PETA when all those chimps got dumped by Hollywood?! No where to be found!! PETA should be ashamed. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review The S Honestly, garbage like this makes it clear we are a society in steep and rapid cultural decline. I get why producers go after this low hanging fruit…it’s the saccharine sweet, intellectually rotten stuff that Amerciams flock to en masse. So producers chase the money and the “fame” of creating this tripe (because, you know, money and attention at whatever the cost) and that’s where we are culturally: making stupid people famous for how just massively offensive they are to the senses and what a train wreck their lives are. PETA isn’t innocent in this situation since it’s clear they were locked in for way more than just the chimps. This is dumb vs dumber of reality TV…exploiting stupid people for profit. That’s become the primary American business model. Certain (ahem) reality-TV loving politicians have literally tapped into this by making millions off of their intellectually stunted base by selling NFTs, sneakers and Bibles. Same business model as “filmmakers” (I use that term as loosely as possible) who take these people out of the shadows and put them in the limelight. I could have lived 100 lifetimes (and so could you) without ever having learned about any of this story. Meanwhile, important and pressing issues and topics go unaddressed by documentarians and filmmakers because they’re all chasing this lowest common denominator tripe and pretending that it has some kind of cultural value. It does not. At all. It’s so depressing that this is Amercian culture in 2024 and that the producers are acting like this contributes something to peoples’ lives when it’s the intellectual equivalent to drinking a case of generic soda pop in one sitting followed by the disgusting, sick rush they get from the sugar content. Gross. All of it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review K A Very hard to watch because it boils my blood. If you need one more reason to hate humans then watch it I guess. I am not sure how problematic it is to give a huge audience to these crazy animal abusers. I am from a Western European country and I can't believe that it's 2024 and there are states in the US where you can just do what you want to wild animals. I just cannot comprehend it.
