What to Know

Critics Consensus

An affectionate ode to the beauty of ballet and the difficult personalities behind it, Étoile isn't as tonally nimble as previous Sherman-Palladino series but packs plenty of the same charms.

Étoile” is filled with the kind of detail balletomanes live for. Go to Full Review

You don’t have to be into ballet to be into Etoile, a zippy, pleasurable and accessible-for-all drama-comedy, but you do have to vibe with Sherman-Palladino’s sensibilities – everything and everyone is extra. Go to Full Review

Extreme world-building like this only works when the story is grounded in reality or when the audience cares about the characters living in it. Without either, this series feels like an overreaching and self-indulgent exposition. Go to Full Review

With “Étoile,” the Palladinos are building a deep reflection on how ethical dilemmas intersect with the need to preserve art. Go to Full Review

…[Étoile] is of such a high level that it opens a new path in television fiction, but one, as always, that only seems possible under [Sherman-Palladino’s] incorruptible hand. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Jane G Nov 21 This was a cracker. Sharp with attitude and style, and the actors/dancers were great. Looking forward to further seasons. See more Tom F Oct 20 The show works hard to make you think ballet might be interesting. Anything the Pallidinos do is worth watching, as frustrating as it will invariably get. Simon Callow seems to have a lot of fun dropping in as Crispin Shamblee, a James Bond villain and patron of the arts. See more Gracelyn M. @gmosier Sep 28 This is the first tv show to ever draw me in they way that it did! It was beautifully written and hilarious while deeply moving me. I’m truly heartbroken that it was cancelled and I’m hoping it gets picked back up! See more Renee M Jul 26 Excellent writing, acting--visually a gem! Not necessary to be into ballet. Characters are very interesting. I love the story lines...the mix of French characters and language! The scenes of Paris are great. I don't think that this show was promoted well---what a shame! See more Meegan H Jul 20 The plot is so over-the-top, the acting so overwrought that it borders on ridiculous. Particularly any scene with Crispin Shamblee - I feel sorry for the actor who has to bring this absurd character to life. I'd love to hear what dancers have to say about this show. I really hope they don't face the silly situations that arise in this silly series. If the world of dance really is like this .... well, I don't think I'll be counting many dancers among my friends. One positive is the production values. See more Andrei D Jul 14 It's impressively bad considering what it has to work with See more Read all reviews
