What to Know

Critics Consensus

An affectionate ode to the beauty of ballet and the difficult personalities behind it, Étoile isn't as tonally nimble as previous Sherman-Palladino series but packs plenty of the same charms.

Amber Dowling Globe and Mail Extreme world-building like this only works when the story is grounded in reality or when the audience cares about the characters living in it. Without either, this series feels like an overreaching and self-indulgent exposition. May 2, 2025 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR The result is a stylish, if self-important look at an industry on the ropes, led by people who have serious trouble admitting just how deep their problems go. May 1, 2025 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) It doesn’t take itself or the art form too seriously, although the dancing bits are beautiful to watch. The script, like the dancers, is mostly light-footed and waspish. Rated: 3/5 Apr 28, 2025 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com If it features Nina Arianda then I am hooked. Rated: 6/10 May 13, 2025 Full Review Neely Swanson Beverly Hills Courier Étoile is one of the most perfect, and I don’t use that term lightly, pilots I’ve ever seen. The Palladinos introduce almost all the characters in the first episode... You will know them from the very beginning and be amazed at [their] growth. May 12, 2025 Full Review Juan Pablo Russo EscribiendoCine ...those who allow themselves to be carried away by the discontinuous rhythm, the eloquent details, and the hidden critique will find a series that doesn't aim to be complacent but rather to provoke an uncomfortable reflection...[Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 May 5, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Andrea Q Amazing! So fun and it gets better each episode. So original as well Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Jack W Great fun. If you like dance this is for you. You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy this. Well written and funny. Lots of good actors, you’ll recognize a lot of them. Good stuff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review C S It’s lovely. Lighthearted, but explores the world of ballet without being overdone with just the right amount of beautifully choreographed dance segments. Addresses perhaps the dying audiences of ballet, but shows the contemporary treatment of the ballet art form that many might never realize exists. All this is done with a charming depiction of all the individuals that are involved in producing the art of ballet. Artistes are just that artistes, a step above and beyond normality but human folk. Truly entertaining. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Anya S While highly entertaining, with gorgeous locations, the problem with Étoile is that the Palladino team is writing the script as if all the characters were still in the stand-up-comedy world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The snappy, quick repartee seems forced, and the style of discourse seems more suited to the Jewish New Yorkers of Maisel than the administrators of the ballet world. The style doesn't work as well in French since it makes it impossible to read the sub-titles fast enough. And why is everyone shouting and angry all the time? How many times do we have to hear "toro"? The finale dance scenes are lovely, although the on-stage kiss ridiculously contrived. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Julyrubyrose R Hilarious and so fun. I had a blast watching it. I deeply hope to see more of it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Emma F A satirical look at the world of ballet, where the characters are as diverse as the performances themselves.
