Alison Herman Variety House of David seems to take its appeal for granted: the show is based on one of the most famous stories ever told, and therefore has no need to explain what’s going on or why we should care. In reality, the opposite is true. Mar 1, 2025 Full Review Monique Jones Common Sense Media This series wants to bring biblical stories to the level of Game of Thrones. Mar 19, 2025 Full Review Martin Carr CBR To watch a show like House of David, that manifests the word of God as something tangible is both brave and brazen in contemporary society. To weave it into a moral fable set in the Middle East at this political point in time also carries some weight. Rated: 8/10 Mar 19, 2025 Full Review Peter T. Chattaway Christianity Today Mostly, I’m curious to see how the series follows the template that it’s setting for itself... The shepherd’s story gets a lot more earthbound after this. House of David may have to pad its story even more to keep the fantasy alive. Mar 1, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While House Of David is a good looking series with good performances, none of the characters are made more interesting than how they’re depicted in the Bible. Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Brett McCracken The Gospel Coalition House of David does a commendable job of being both narratively interesting and biblically faithful. Leonie R This series is a is brilliant. Can’t wait for the second season to come out Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Sam A A fun watch. The programme does warn that it's not biblically accurate, and how can it be with such a short story in the bible. It's good to see a refreshing poetic license take on the story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Lewis P I Watch a lot of ok, decent and even quite good shows but it takes many years for something like house of david to stir my spirit and really engage with. They kept a very strong theme of obedience to God and the the penalty for disobedience and the judgement of God. Heavy themes, very hard to pull it off in a contempory way but they do it. They do weave in a little bit of filler in a few of the episodes but I think the creative changes were good, filling in some gaps without compromising on the key message. They have a tough road ahead with this story with future seasons but Ill be there day 1. As long as they keep the central message of the story and don't try to twist the plot too much, this could be greater than game of thrones, perhaps for a slightly different audience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Heyits E As a Davidic enthusiast, I can say that this retelling of David was poorly done---and this is specifically character wise. Filming and effects were fantastic. Costumes were beautifully done. Selecting the actors----that needs some MASSIVE improvement. In scripture David was described as having red hair and reddish skin, with handsome looks. And the most important thing having a great zeal for God, which David NATURALLY had. This series did this great king DIRTY. And I must also mention, that David's brothers were also known to be very handsome too--so why on God's green earth did this film team make the King of Israel not only look EXTREMELY wimpy, skinny, and weak---but also manage to make his brothers look like they crawled out of an alley way like homeless men? If this was to give David some character development. Someone was definitely not reading the story. Or was in fact very lazy from the get go. The acting for David was horrific. It was bland, weak, and didn't scream David. When you read the story of David in the Bible. You can see him so on fire for God, he was ready to pounce at anyone----you don't see that at all with this actor. He was very underwhelming as if he wasn't putting any effort in. He was robotic and had no character. His singing voice was good and that was the only thing he was actually good at, unfortunately. If I was a casting director, I would have searched high and low for someone to portray that ZEAL, the STRENGTH, and the FIERY SPIRIT naturally. Not only that, dye the actor's hair to an auburn to match David's description. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/28/25 Full Review DiCat F I am very much into Biblical films/dramas etc. Yes this was good but so much was filmed with bad lighting and I found it very difficult at times to make out who was who and what was happening. unfortunately it spoilt it for me, I would not watch again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Ryan K This was a great series to watch. Yes there is some dragging involved since it basically stretched 1 Samuel 16 and 17 into 8 episodes. There is definitely some liberties taken with the story but the general theme of the historical account is there. It was a good first season. Looking forward to the next one.
