Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Assayas’s entertainment-industry satire is at once a TV series, a film, and a long visual essay about art and life. Dec 13, 2022 Full Review A.A. Dowd Digital Trends The offhand magic of the film is missed in this more supersized, bluntly self-conscious TV version, which often seems determined to explain what Assayas once felt comfortable leaving unarticulated. Nov 21, 2022 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Less film about film, more film about film about film about film. Glorious chaos. Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Pallavi Keswani The Hindu Assayas infuses new life into his 1996 film, ruminating on the eccentricities that ensue while making a show. Jan 23, 2024 Full Review Akhil Arora Gadgets360 When René unravels and sees his therapist, when he makes up absurd directions on set, or when he clashes with his ulterior-motive producers, it's Assayas processing through his own emotions. Irma Vep is possibly the world's most expensive therapy session. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/22/23 Full Review Katie M One of my favourite shows ever and most underrated shows I've ever seen. Should have won all the awards. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review Martin F Irma Vep, the show, shines as an essay on the 8th art, with very interesting points and eloquent quotes about what cinema means for us viewers but also for people working in the field. The characters feel true, annoying at time, but mostly relatable in their weakness. If you are not interested in discussion about art, creativity and human psyche thought the art of cinema, you may feel the show a little too slow and sometimes pretentious. I could have given a perfect score but despite amazing "real life scenes" where we follow the actors and the movie staff going through all the issue that can happen in a movie set, the "movie scenes" are not as great. The extracts of the movie they are filming, that pops up here and there during the show, are not really well-done despite being presented as directed by the most artistic director while following the intriguing story of the 1915-movie Les Vampires. The colors and some special effects make it look like really amateurs which kind of take you out of the show as you are supposed to think this is a high-art movie. Alicia Vikander is the perfect lead for this movie and it's perfectly believable as this magnetic actress that her characters is meant to be. She gives a very strong performance without having any big dramatic moment. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/23 Full Review Pavlos L The scenario is insanely witty, production is excellent, actors perfect, director excellent. An 8 hours movie with twists ian inner plots which will challenge your mind and remind us for one more time what a clever story means. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Harlan C A whirlwind of Hollywood life, film set disasters and celebrity dramas, with an interesting look at what old cinema means now. This is really fun to watch and excellent performances all round. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/23 Full Review Gorica L Episode 1 - painfully boring, acting not wuite satisfying. Will watch a couple more sinve it was recommended by a friend, but so far so bad Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/26/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a review
