Critics Consensus

Maid takes great care with its sensitive subject matter to craft a drama that is not always easy to watch, but undeniably powerful, grounded by an outstanding performance by Margaret Qualley.

Maid deals with the hardship of female poverty with a straight approach, and always centred through the experiences of this sympathetic character that you want to root for. Go to Full Review

At a time when women's discontent has gone from "the problem that has no name" to a primal scream, Maid fails to show a place in between, one where mothers are given a voice without having to be perfect. Go to Full Review

Less than two months after its release, Maid has brought audiences across the world to their knees. Gritty, raw, almost painful in places, this Netflix series more than lives up to the hype. Go to Full Review

It takes the average woman 7 attempts to leave her abusive partner. And nearly 25% of single mothers live in poverty. Maid shines a light on a real problem, and the thoroughly broken system trying to solve it. It should be required watching for all of us. Go to Full Review

Philly B. @PhillyBurbs Feb 19 This was inspired by real events. No one knows what goes on in someone's home except the occupants. My X was a nice guy. Charming, tall handsom. Cool drink of water. Everyone loved him & envied me. I felt like I was married to two different men. Every night he would start drinking after our daughter went to bed. The alcohol brought out his true feelings, he not only could not stand me but blamed me for all of the unhappiness in his life. I wish there was phones back then. When I started to share after a few years, no one believed me. I had no support he played me like a fiddle. I kept everything to myself. Don't do that. When I finally shared, no one could believe it. After I filed for child support, I came home from work & she was gone. Poof. Verbal, emotional abuse is the worse kind. There isnt anything tangible there to show. Keep a diary. I didn't, you should. Overnight i went from mom to being called by my first name. He had something to prove. He had to prove to his family, friends & girlfriend & that I was crazy. His family was there for him, I've been on my own since I was 17. My mom would call me in the middle of the & tell me how embarrassed she was. That i better get him back. Wow, I haven't thought about that in over 15 yrs. Bottom line it does get better. Life goes on. The movie hit a nerve. See more Cate J @Cate1468 Jan 19 Maid is ESSENTIAL viewing for any woman who has been in a relationship and second guesses her experience as she is gaslight and told she is crazy while being emotionally, pyschologically, financially, sexually and coercively controlled. There is a MYTH that unless you are beaten black and blue and lying almost dead in the ER department that you HAVE NOT experienced domestic violence. This is the MYTH. The MYTH is perpetrated by males against females and sanctioned by the police, religions, government departments, health care practitioners and often, the woman's own family and friends. Domestic violence is a continuum. It starts out with gaslighting and verbal abuse until it becomes physical. I wish this program had been available 25 years ago. . .if it had, my life would have been very different. I urge EVERY woman to view this thoughtful and poignant series . . .it may saves, yours or someone else. See more nekkaleo T @nekkaleo Jan 8 I think this tv show is great. Of course, it’s not perfect, but the way it captures fears and overthinking about the situation Alex’s going through really hits home. I read tons of criticism towards the actors but I think they did a good job, Margaret Qualley is able to portray complex emotions in a unique way that I personally appreciated. See more User U @RT15593792 Oct 13 This movie helped me to understand myself. It was spot on. See more Martin B @RT44235356 Sep 22 I binged it and enjoyed it as much as anyone but come on man this is not an award winning presentation. Make it more realistic with an unattractive disheveled, perpetually exhausted woman with a child that whines all the time experiencing the exact same thing and you don’t get past the first episode. Alex gets away with constant self sabotaging decisions because they hired an actress thats beautul and presented her as perpetually well groomed, persevering and hard working. This was a fantasy where everything was just so perfect for the audience to root for the heroin, not the least of which was the child actress who seemed to have a smile no matter how much she got shuffled around from person to person or place to place. See more Scott C @Scott947 Aug 26 I’m a silver spoon republican from Newport Beach CA and this series opened my eyes but most importantly my heart. We definitely need more resources for families and women and men too. I felt empathy for every character and despite being middle aged with a lotta life experience, this was an earth shattering wake up call for the government programs and institutions that keep people whole when there is nothing for them. Hit me very hard. Incredible series. Amen See more Read all reviews
