Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times What’s different this time is that Maigret himself has been given a makeover, made younger, buffer, sexier, slightly more of an action hero, with the beard often assigned to the modern police detective. Oct 7, 2025 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal A perfectly serviceable Sunday-night crime series, even a worthy entry among presentations of the venerable “Masterpiece Mystery!” But the setup does seem to invite the antipathy of longtime Simenon fans. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Overall, "Maigret" feels expressly built to deliver a nuts-and-bolts procedural whodunnit, which it does with satisfying precision. Oct 26, 2025 Full Review Alan Mehanna CBR If the first season proves anything, it’s that MASTERPIECE's Maigret thrives on patience and character, a rare commodity in today's climate. Rated: 8/10 Oct 7, 2025 Full Review Brittany Frederick TVBrittanyF.com It’s in vogue now to take iconic sleuths and put a modern spin on them, but the question is always why? What do these shows have other than name recognition? In Maigret‘s case, it’s a knowing wink to the audience. Rated: B Oct 6, 2025 Full Review Lyra Hale Fangirlish In a world where detective stories lean into action-packed sequences with tons of sensory overload, PBS Masterpiece series Maigret stands out with its mystery stories grounded in understanding and not judgment. Richard C Nowhere as good as the short lived Rowan Atkinson version, lost interest after about 20 minutes, the main character is as far away from the original Simeon character as you can get, turned it off after about 35 minutes , couldn't bother watching any more, sad, because the Maigret books have always been good reads . Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Gail O A cut above most in this genre - extremely well written, acted & filmed. Wishing for more Maigret! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review John D. This is a complete departure from the Simenon masterpiece. It is treated like a modern police procedural which means more time is spent on personal drama and very little time is invested in the story of the crime. Which means we’re forced into watching Maigret walking, brooding, visiting with wife and doing everything but solving the crime before everything comes together in the last two minutes of the story. Either the actor is too wooden or the script too stale for each and every character. Very painful to watch. What they’ve done to the Countess story is a travesty. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review John S I yawned a lot! Too slow paced! Couldn't get the motors running! The actors were good but no one special stood out. Wainwright doesn't have the spark needed for the lead in my opinion and Martini (Love that name.) is simply wasted. She was great in "The Gold." And YES! Speaking English in Paris just doesn't work for me! Jarring! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/28/25 Full Review T U Typical, modern cop series. The know it all main character. The boss lady, under pressure to solve the case. No one else can do it but Maigret! And of course he'll do it his way. So sad ITV didn't bring back an excellent Maigret starring Rowan Atkinson. Definitely better than this new version. Look it up if you haven't seen it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Jonathan M Some obvious plots, and some cookie cutter characters, but a nice change from the English crime dramas.
