It took me about three episodes to settle into The Lowdown. As an Oklahoman, though, you begin to notice beats a casual viewer might miss. What can look like cartoonish or cheap uncomfortable themes is, in fact, historic—etched into this place in unbelievable ways, from Black Wall Street to Killers of the Flower Moon. The plot isn’t just plausible; it’s familiar. The characters feel like people you meet day to day. We may be tired of the subject, the way we tire of looking in the mirror, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. The Lowdown is fiction, but Harjo is a gifted writer and director. For all the oddities, complexities, and absurdities, he’s just telling it like it is. And I’d be wary of dismissive reviews—it’s worth the watch, and the introspection.
