Critics Consensus

Brightening up its mysteries with a hometown affection for Tulsa and hanging its hat on Ethan Hawke's hangdog charisma, The Lowdown reaches impressive highs as pulpy entertainment.

Phillip Maciak The New Republic The Lowdown is a thoughtful, shambling neo-noir that’s only occasionally, itself, a shambles. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Soraya Nadia McDonald Pop Culture Happy Hour (NPR Podcast) [The show’s world] feels very complete, the way [Sterlin Harjo is] using mise en scene, the way that it feels almost like a very literary television show, not in a pretentious way. Oct 1, 2025 Full Review Linda Holmes Pop Culture Happy Hour (NPR Podcast) The vibe is going to be a very big word with this show, but that's just because the vibe of it is so good. Oct 1, 2025 Full Review Kyle Mullin Under the Radar The Lowdown hits more highs in a moment of screen time than most series do in their comparatively feeble entire run times. Rated: 9/10 Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Mel Campbell ABC Radio (Australia) The shaggy vibe of this is so much fun. … I particularly liked that it’s made from an Indigenous perspective, so [Harjo] is always looking at [Lee Raybon] with exasperation. He’s not a white saviour at all; he’s a white bumbler. And I love it. Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Ty'Kira Smalls Common Sense Media This series is a riveting and rugged portrayal of Tulsa's history. Stephen C 8 successful FX episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/25 Full Review Daniel L Love this show. Great acting across the board, Ethan Hawke of course is amazing. The writing is legitimately hilarious sometimes, like I can laugh harder watching this show than some comedies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review John S. Could have been much better. Hawke, while a great actor, comes across as a bumbling fool one too many times. Plot becomes predictable and boring with each episode. Whites are r—-cist. Yawn. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review P. M I wasn't sure how it would go when I heard about The Lowdown. I love Sterlin Harjo's writing and Reservation Dogs is, by far, one of the best TV shows ever made and I mean that with all the honesty a human can have. The Lowdown is as far from a "let down" as one could get and to say otherwise is being more hateful than genuine. The Lowdown is the perfect punk-rock noir mystery that our country needs right now. It offers salient points about the idea of people being more than what is shown or written, that the true "war" is a class war and it always has been, and that we are all down here in the dirt so we all may as well help each other out. The Lowdown is a truly beautiful show and a wonderful followup to Reservation Dogs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Stephanie D The Lowdown is extremely entertaining and well written! Ethan Hawke is fabulous and the casting is well done. This is a unique show in today’s sea of choices. Definitely give it a try and I hope we get more season’s! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Rob W The Lowdown? Two word review, "The Letdown" Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
