What to Know

Critics Consensus

An irreverent and self-referential comedy speaking to Gen Z existentialism, I Love LA is equal parts funny and cringe thanks to creator Rachel Sennott's absurdist sensibility.

It’s a little bit scrappy, it’s a little bit loose, but so are its characters, and that’s why I Love LA is actually so fun to just hang out with. Go to Full Review
Sam Adams Slate Nov 4
The writing gets sharper and more distinct over the course of the season, especially as its perspective broadens beyond its core characters’ petty obsessions. Go to Full Review
Sonia Rao Washington Post Nov 3
While the jokes land inconsistently and often rely on strong performers to elevate them, these are vividly drawn characters. Go to Full Review

Nobody, thanks to their own deficiencies or cruel circumstances, seems capable of getting – or at least keeping – the things they want either way. And it’s all very funny, about as much as it’s deeply sad. Go to Full Review

I liked season one of I Love LA a lot. It can feel shallow, but some of that works with the humor and just how different this generation of young people is from the previous ones, and just how much the journeys feel familiar. Go to Full Review

It's uneven, sometimes clumsy, but its power lies in the honesty with which it portrays a society that lives to project itself. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Primo 1 2d HBO’s "I Love LA" is not funny, and they renewed it? And what’s up with True Whitaker? She seems totally out of her element. Ironically, she got cast as the rich nepo baby, which would’ve been a piece of cake for her. But instead, she delivers her lines with a mumble and an exaggerated grimace that falls flat every time. See more Erin S 3d I’ve never reviewed a TV show before. My conscious brought me here (hyperbole). Just in case someone who makes decisions about which shows get made and whose shows get made may see it … because WHY is it this? Writing and acting. So bad it hurts. *How* at HBO? I don’t know TV writing but I know TV watching. I imagine there are so many amazing things to be made and so much true potential out there — even just for this exact genre/style — had my hopes so high and this is not even close to halfway-to-good, let alone great. (And yes, I gave it a try to ep 5, despite wanting to quit after 1 — just in case I was wrong. Giving up now.) See more Jay O. @jayoh27 3d So bad that it makes me wonder if these actors have blackmail on HBO See more Jamie M Nov 27 It's as insufferable as you think it is. The writing is so basic and bad. It's as embarrassing to watch this as it would be to hang out with these characters in public, my god. See more Allison B Nov 25 Desperately seeking something to recommend it, & was very excited to watch as I love Rachel Sennott. Always tough to enjoy a show when there’s genuinely no one to root for and these characters hit the psyche like a cheese grater. See more Joe E. @jerdos7284 Nov 21 This show is fantastic. I don’t normally review stuff, but I wanted to try to bring balance to the conversation on this one because it seems that the involuntary celibates don’t like it and are actively trying to tank the metrics. I look forward to watching this show. You should check it out. See more Read all reviews
