Four of Marvel's biggest heroes are each working individually but have one common goal in mind -- to save New York City. Burdened with their own personal challenges, Matt Murdock (Daredevil), Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Iron Fist) realize that they likely won't be able to accomplish their goals working solo. That realization leads them to team up and form The Defenders, a supergroup that is more equipped to save the Big Apple than the heroes would be if they continued to work on their own.

Critics Consensus

Marvel's The Defenders further develops well-known characters in an action-packed arc whose payoff packs more than enough of a punch to offset its flaws.

Toby Earle London Evening Standard This all-punching, all-high-kicking extravaganza is what those solo shows have been building towards, the intimacy of Luke Cage, the first series of Daredevil, and Jessica Jones shoulder-barged aside to knot this universe in an NYC brawl pretzel. Jul 16, 2018 Full Review Brady Dale Observer I just wish the show had gotten started faster. Sep 13, 2017 Full Review David Hinckley New York Daily News The long-awaited Defenders who fight their way onto Netflix next Friday are not your older brother's superheroes. Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Sarah Musnicky Legion of Leia at Vital Thrills We start to finally see things coming together, which should probably have happened more towards the beginning of the episode. Sep 20, 2019 Full Review Josh Wilding ComicBookMovie.com With any luck, the next time these heroes come together, they'll have a better villain to face and a stronger story. Despite those failings, The Defenders still delivers an enjoyable team up for these characters but it's clear it should have been better. Rated: 3/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Kaitlyn Booth Bleeding Cool [It] starts off slow but takes the four genres from the solo series' and slowly blends them to make a unique team dynamic we haven't seen before in the Marvel Universe. The Great John A Marvel's The Defenders is a 2017 action superhero series uniting most of the Marvel Netflix shows by including all the main characters from there as they team up to defeat "The Hand" organisation. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Daredevil uniting in one 8 episode show sounds good, right? well thanks to it's sometimes baffling dialogue and wooden acting, I would consider this to be mediocre at best. I mean, sure the action is great but it's not enough to justify it's slow pacing. I have to say that there's one entire episode of the team eating in a chinese restaurant for nearly an hour?! I know it's trying to build up a reasonable plot but my god it went on for far too long. Iron Fist is a whiny little gobshite and does not bring anything to the table other than the fact he has "connections" to the Kung-Lun which is already explained in his own show which was panned by critics anyway. Luke Cage is meh, but not too bad, his strength and motives are forgiven in a way that he's trying to help out his team and the city whilst showing bravery, which is what a superhero should do. Jessica Jones is ok after a few episodes but towards the end of the series she becomes eye rolling and her jokes are awful. Of course, Matt is really the only thing that's going for most of the show I mean come on guys we all watched it for Daredevil's story so to see his dialogue being weaker than usual is honestly quite bizarre but his connection with a resurrected Elektra makes his story all the worthwhile. Sigourney Weaver's villain has very good presence and acting but her mission is rather questionable as the story progresses even though she is the one of the only things going for this show. Overall, if you're not into any of the shows that they characters come from, definitely skip this I don't really see a point in me ever revisiting this again. The writers from the previous installments just weren't there and it was to compensate for a bigger budget so yeah thanks mediocrity. Grade: C Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Charlie M Definitely does a good job of bringing all the heroes together and in a clever way, also feeling like each’s scenes are pulled straight out of their respective shows. Some disposable characters though, and doesn’t earn the scope and size they wanted it to have. It has good character moments for sure though, especially where it’s essentially Daredevil season 2.5. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Jay W One thing that Marvel did well with 2012's "the Avengers" is that they managed to take the best part of each of the movies up to that point, and combine their strengths into one action packed movie. The Defenders is the opposite of that. They managed to take everything that didn't work in the title characters individual shows and combine them into one mini-series. They bring back the dumb relationship drama between Daredevil and Electra, and dial it up to 11. Electra may be a crazed zombie woman possessed by a deadly killing spirit, but Matt Murdock still wants to find the good in her. Mett will likewise still treat the other people in his lives like a jerk. Let's bring back Iron Fist and have him be the main Maguffin that the villains want for their plan. Iron Fist will try his best to solve this problem through...board meetings. Iron Fist will also continue to make some of the dumbest decisions I've seen on TV. Let's continue to have Luke Cage monologue about how what they are doing isn't making a difference in the grand scheme of things. It is also hard to write a good fight scene around a guy who can tank every hit and then just slap the enemies down. And Let's Bring in Jessica Jones, she will complain the whole time that she would rather be doing anything else. The action isn't helmed all that well. The story has some pacing problems. The characters keep making, just the worst decisions. On the positive side, Sigourney Weaver does a good job in her role. She is just under utilized. There are some characters interactions and action sequences that work. But over all, this series was just a mess. Some people like it, but I'm certainly not one of their defenders. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Khaztiel D El punto malo de esta serie es Iron Fist, uno pensaría que ya esta creciendo pero sigue atrapado en su niñes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Vitoria F Wonderful series, well written, well directed and well acted. The writers are to be congratulated for having managed to keep so many characters faithful to the style of attitude and speech presented in their original series. I especially liked the interactions between Jessica Jones and Daredevil. The only thing missing was a reunion dialogue between Matt and Claire. Otherwise, this series deserved to have had sequels. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Patrick S 5.5 out of 10. Could've been better, but had stuff I liked... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
