Torben E @Torben 2d A very dark and dirty (literally) period piece/crime drama series. Incredible atmosphere, great script (but a slow-burn), great dialogues and amazing actors. Cillian Murphy is super intense as Tommy Shelby, Helen McCrory is so amazing as the heart of the family (while being extremely tough at the same time)...there's really not a minute of poor acting in this series. I just wished that some of the characters were at least a bit more likeable. You have to know that 90% of the time the Peaky Blinders characters (and their police counterparts) drink, fight, shoot or rant...combined with the bleak, filthy look of 1919 Birmingham. As immersive as this is for the viewer, it can also be a bit depressing. Nevertheless it is an amazing series...if you're up for the overall setting and look. Cillian Murphy is phenomenal as Tommy Shelby, but the series also benefits from an exceptional ensemble cast that gives weight to every alliance, betrayal, and family conflict. Beyond the gangster story, it is also about ambition, trauma, class, politics, and survival. Sometimes it can feel a little too in love with its own mythology, but it never becomes empty.
