Although he has no plans to step aside as the head of Waystar Royco, the international media conglomerate controlled by his family, aging patriarch Logan Roy is contemplating what the future holds. He has lingered in the limelight longer than even he thought he would, and now family members want to run the company as they see fit. Despite a best-laid succession plan, tempers flare over Logan's intentions. Kendall Roy, Logan's eldest son from his second marriage and a division president at the firm, is the heir apparent. As Kendall attempts to solidify his eventual takeover, he and the three other Roy children face a difficult choice as company control and family loyalties collide.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Succession returns in darkly funny form, with sharp writing, exceptional performances, and a surprising new level of sympathy for some of television's least likable characters.

Radheyan Simonpillai NOW Toronto That’s how Succession gets us, finding those warm and humane touches in rotten behaviour. Rated: 4/5 Apr 10, 2023 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine HBO's darkly comic, Murdochian King Lear became a breakout hit in its first two seasons, simultaneously satirizing, challenging and capitalizing on a polarized nation's obsession with our billionaire elite. Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Kyndall Cunningham Bitch Media Succession slyly toys with Americans' impulse to see the good in the worst people, particularly when those people are white. Jul 21, 2020 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? Rather than a major player constantly igniting firestorms only to be sabotaged by the writers, the shifting conflicts arrive on a much smaller scale in service of the main thrust. It lets us as viewers enjoy the ride without the whiplash. Rated: 8/10 Apr 21, 2023 Full Review Victor Pineyro Seventh Art Studio The scary thing is that there are no villains in Succession. Everything is as real and cruel as normal life. Few TV shows have this smooth flow between drama and comedy and it's a lot about the actors. Full review in Spanish Rated: 9/10 Apr 8, 2022 Full Review Jason Fraley WTOP (Washington, D.C.) Its family power struggle has echoes of "The Lion in Winter" and "The Godfather," only instead of Peter O'Toole or Marlon Brando, we have Brian Cox as patriarch Logan Roy scheming to hand over his empire. Paul S Once again, the show was incredibly enjoyable, and the story became so much more intriguing. I definitely recommend it for drama fans! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Myles H Succession masquerades as profound commentary on power and family by dressing up soap opera dynamics in expensive suits and literary references. The show invites viewers to feel intellectually superior while watching terrible people be terrible to each other—without offering any genuine insight beyond 'the ultra-wealthy are miserable too.' It's emotional pornography for the NPR crowd: the pleasure of watching privileged people suffer, packaged with enough prestige markers that audiences can pretend they're engaging with something meaningful rather than simply indulging in schadenfreude. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review džEJMS b what to say, I was excited before I started watching, considering all the positive reviews the series received. after 5 episodes I was disappointed. the characters are fantastically characterized. their greed, hunger for power, influence, their narcissism, psychopathy, dependence on a deranged father, incompetence and spoiledness... I don't need to mention that the acting is superb. however, you get to know all these characters and their characteristics already after the first three episodes, and the series has 39 of them. What happens in the other 36? if you ask me, nothing. the story revolves always around the same. greedy and narcissistic children are fighting for the position of director, i.e. the successor of their father. and they are doing that for 39 episodes. in each one and the same. nothing original, everything could be told in 10 episodes. one more thing disappointed me, and that is the structure of the episodes. namely, every but every episode is structured in such a way that all the characters are in the same place at the same time; at a funeral, at a party, at a wedding, on a boat... it's cool to see what trash people can be, but in my opinion there is no originality or uniqueness Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Matis E A pure chef d’œuvre, as always great story and great acting. The twists and dialogues makes it one of the greatest show of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Jas M So disappointing. We start and end the season the same place we were at the end of Season 1. HBO's desire to prolong this promising show shouldn't result in a retread. If Season 3 ends with Logan still dangling the carrot of successor in front of his kids without any decision, will be a major disappointment.
