Based on Stephen King's best-selling novel of the same name, "The Outsider" begins by following an investigation which at first seems like it will be simple and straightforward but things change as it leads into the gruesome murder of a young boy by a seasoned cop. When an insidious supernatural force edges its way into the case, it leads the investigators to question everything they believe in. The character of Holly Gibney from "Mr. Mercedes" is a major character in this series.

Critics Consensus

Though The Outsider's slow burn isn't always satisfying, it remains watchable thanks to its excellent performances -- especially series standout Cynthia Erivo.

Graeme Blundell The Australian Mendelsohn continuing his great work in TV, with another display of that distinctive brand of jittery intensity, as a Georgia cop who is faced with the grisly investigation, a particularly unpleasant and brutal murder of a child. Dec 16, 2020 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) The Outsider pulls off a remarkable high-wire balancing act... It's classic King, this eruption of the otherworldly in the midst of Middle American normality. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba The whirlingly macabre, ruthlessly tense, and transfixingly spooky mood of The Outsider makes the mini-series a must-see this spring. Jan 19, 2020 Full Review Daniel Seddon NME (New Musical Express) Hopefully, The Outsider's Fincher-flavoured intensity and sharp acting performances will prove a winning combination for viewers. Rated: 4/5 Jul 13, 2021 Full Review Fausto Ponce Alta Fidelidad Magazine The Outsider continues to hold us in deep suspense. [Full review in Spanish] Apr 26, 2021 Full Review Valerie Ettenhofer Film School Rejects It's King's oeuvre as we've never seen it done before, with moody camerawork, taut scripts, and what at first appears to be a complete genre shift for the Master of Horror. Jo D Too drawn out, could have been much shorter than 10 episodes. The ending left too many unanswered questions. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Zach B A slow burn that hits a stall, this is probably the paranormal crime thriller that Season 4 of True Detective aspired to become. If the terrain feels familiar (supernatural villain who feeds on children, murders in cycles, and meets his end underground in caves) it's because the series is based on a 2018 horror novel by Stephen King. The powerful cast of actors and actresses carry the story, which felt at least two episodes too long. Kudos to the acting and direction (Bateman) though, because overall this is competent and gripping storytelling. Worth a watch this Halloween. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Korra N One of the best Stephen King adaptations to date, HBO's The Outsider is a fascinating blend of genres that works immensely well, although its deliberate pacing may turn some views looking for immediate scares away. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Les N I always enjoyed the non-supernatural side of Stephen King's novels. Much the same with this. Ben Mendelsohn is by far the best. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Erin S Combine the talents of Jason Bateman (director, actor) with Stephen King, and you have another outstanding miniseries. Until about Episode 7 of 10. Then the time loop begins. It’s not ACTUALLY a time loop, in the sense of part of the story. But when you’re seeing all the same plot points relitigated over and over, mixed with a bunch of scenes that have no purpose other than to further drive home already-well-established characterization or unevolving relationship dynamics, and a tortured plea for the kind of now-you’re-really-invested friend-group vibes that King did well in It but not here…for the last three episodes you definitely feel like it’s Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day except not funny. When the flat, conventional, yawn-worthy ending finally does arrive three episodes later than necessary, it’s Groundhog Day all over again because you’ve seen this same ending in similarly pedestrian stories a thousand times before. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Patrício Cloud R One of my favorite series. Everything about "The Outsider" is incredibly good. The story is incredible and very well tied together thanks to the well-written script. The cinematography is excellent and the actors have been cast very well for their roles. The story manages to maintain the suspense and mystery right to the end, without going overboard like many series these days. One of the HBO's binge. 10/10.
