While Fall Out Boy would become known for its pop-punk style, the origins of the Illinois band were born from the Chicago-area hardcore scene. Growing dissatisfied with the tenor of the hardcore scene, founding members Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman set off to create a new band in 2001, which wound up being named after a Simpsons reference. Fall Out Boy hit the scene, touring around the area before Fueled by Ramen and Island Records took heed. The band signed an "incubator" deal, where their first album would be on the independent Fueled by Ramen label and their second would be on the much bigger Island label. Their first album, Take This to Your Grave, launched in 2003 to raucous praise and acclaim. Hailed as the next big thing, the band started to record their second album, From Under the Cork Tree. However, bassist Wentz attempted suicide during recording as he dealt with immense anxiety and self-doubt. As the album released and the first single "Sugar, We're Goin Down" started ruling the charts, Wentz was recovering at home with his parents. Soon after, the band toured around the country, selling out arenas and even earning a Grammy nomination. The band was gigantic, and continued to dominate the sales charts with their 2007 follow-up Infinity on High, though their sound evolved past the pop-punk origins into a pure pop spectacle with touches of funk and R&B. After their next album, the 2009 release Folie a Deux, the band went on hiatus as tensions rose and their fans were divided over their old and new music. Three years later, the band reunited for a new tour and a new album, called Save Rock and Roll. Their stated goal in reforming was to throw away their old sound and do something new. It appeared to work as the new album lit up sales charts. Rejuvenated, they kept on touring and eventually recorded a new album, the 2015 release American Beauty/American Psycho.
