Konrad Wolf
Wolf's life, with a family background in the Weimar Republic and years of exile in Soviet Russia, mirrors the half-century existence of the German Democratic Republic. The well-received "I was 19" (1968) recalls his return to a war-torn homeland as an officer with the conquering Red Army. He won a Jury Prize at Cannes for "Sterne/Stars" (1958) and a Silver Bear at Berlin for "Solo Sunny" (1980) and is the subject of the documentary, "The Time that Remains" (1985), made by his screenwriter, Wolfgang Kohlhaase. Wolf's father, Friedrich, was a screenwriter and playwright as well as an ambassador and cultural minister for the GDR.
