Steve Marshall

After years of working in radio, Steve Marshall broke into television by writing a spec script for the sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati," which, ironically, revolves around a radio station and its employees' lives. CBS purchased the script and hired Marshall as a staff writer where he made friends with another writer, Dan Guntzelman. When the show came to an end, the two teamed up to write and co-executive produce "Gloria," the Sally Struthers spinoff of the groundbreaking sitcom "All in the Family." The series was short-lived, and the two quickly moved on to an original project, "Off the Rack," which starred Edward Asner as the co-owner of a struggling garment factory. This was another disappointment, but success was just around the corner. Marshall and Guntzelman were asked to co-write and co-produce a new show for CBS, "Growing Pains." The comedy series followed the family life of a married couple (played by Alan Thicke and Joanna Kearns) and their children, most notably the teen heartthrob Kirk Cameron. For seven years the duo kept the show relevant and popular, rarely dropping out of the top 20 in the Nielsen ratings. However, Marshall was convicted on charges of distribution and possession of child pornography in 2010, and sentenced to 7½ years in an Arkansas state prison.
