John Kinloch California Eagle Hurricane was really not much more than the spectacle of huge billows of water swamping a South Sea Island; nevertheless, its effect is nearly stupendous. Oct 31, 2019 Full Review Ann Ross Maclean's Magazine There have been tornadoes on the screen before, but compared with the Goldwyn catastrophe they don't seem much more impressive to look back on than a burst water main. Jul 23, 2019 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com John Ford's popular film is an early, stunning sampler of the disaster genre, in which the love story between scantily clad Jon Hall and Dorothy Lamour is secondary to the major set-piece, which won the Sound Oscar. j f 1937 special effects more convincing than today's cgi. Otherwise pretty middy story. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Some parts are terribly corny with dialog handed to the actors in the form of declamations but overall a well directed and enjoyable film. The picture doesn't require any heavy lifting dramatically but Hall is fine in the lead, certainly a dashing protagonist and Dorothy of course looks great in her sarong. It's the supporting cast, a collection of dynamite character actors, that make this memorable. Any movie lucky enough to have Mary Astor, Thomas Mitchell, Jerome Cowan, Raymond Massey and John Carradine contributing their individual presence is worth seeing if only for them but this has good special effects, for the time, and a fun story to boot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A film with some stilted acting but impressive visual effects that hold up today. The film starts off as a flashback but never returns to the present time, leaving the audience to question why the story needed to be set up as a flashback. Lamont and Hall star as two married polynesians whose lives become separated due to Hall's character being locked up in Tahiti, miles away from his home on another island. Their interactions are very cliched and dull at the beginning of the film. The prison scenes are, however, well-acted and directed. The hurricane scenes were very impressive especially for that time. It really feels like the actors are being battered by a hurricane and allows the audience to feel immersed in the film. The film deservedly won best sound recording for impressively balancing the hurricane sounds with the actor's lines. It was also nominated for best scoring which I didn't find very noteworthy. Thomas Mitchell was nominated for Best Supporting Actor as a drunk doctor whose character gets a bit boring and tedious and, out of the two performances I have seen in that category (the other being Bellamy), he probably gave the weakest performance. I would've instead nominated the priest who gives a much better performance. Overall, a film with a good story, some good acting and impressive visual effects that I would enjoy watching again. Not on the same level as Ford's The Grapes of Wrath , but certainly nowhere near his worst (*cough* The Informer *cough*). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member The climax at the end was very well done for 1937. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review steve d It has lost most of its effectiveness over the years. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The best thrilling movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
