Peter Travers Rolling Stone Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Dick Lochte Los Angeles Free Press [I] found it a trifle pretentious and confusing and was sad to discover that the rest of the movie never quite matched the moments during which Bobby Short belted out the title song. Dec 31, 2019 Full Review Christopher Hudson The Spectator The film, within its own limited and minor ambitions, succeeds admirably. May 12, 2015 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2005 Full Review Matt Brunson Creative Loafing Feels like lesser Luis Bunuel (or Derek Jarman); it's an intriguing short-film idea stretched out to feature length, worth a glance primarily as an artifact of its time. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 30, 2004 Full Review Christopher Null the one-joke premise quickly wears thin Rated: 3/5 Jun 26, 2004 Full Review Read all reviews

walter m In "Savages," the Mud People are about sacrifice a human to their gods when they are interrupted by a mysterious round object rolling into their camp. Following it back to its source, they capture a member of a rival tribe. That path leads to a wondrous dwelling, full of shiny objects and furs... Well, you have to admit it. "Savages" is different. And not just because it is a Merchant/Ivory movie about a group of primitives who suddenly find themselves in a Merchant/Ivory film, done in a mixture of styles including silent movies, about a decade before those names became synonymous for politely restrained period pieces.(Added to the chronal displacement is an impossibly young Sam Waterston not playing somebody who pontificates at the drop of a hat.) At least, here the social criticism and satire is less obtuse than usual, especially on the subject of colonialism with a little genderbending thrown in for good measure, along with a special emphasis on the thin line between civilization and savagery. Plus, croquet. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member NOT THIS FILM. Unfortunatly savage the film i just saw, is on flickster but for some strange reason cant get it on my films watched 2011 list, so i did it here. a harrowing tale of a guy severly beat up, and later you hear to what extent he got beat up, he cant cope with daily routine, and lack of confidence so his life goes downhill, a well made irish film with a powerful lead performance, really getting into his charactor and his situation, a well made film with both revenge elements and human emotion drama, not to mention state of todays culture of violence Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member You can take the Mud People out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the Mud People. And beneath our civilized facades,we're all Mud People. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member this probally my least favorite merchant/ivory movie interesting premiss but lame execution. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A very funny art house comedy. If you're a fan of unorthodox, smart little movies, this one is for you.
