It was probably confronting at the time, but today Scream Bloody Murder is a nonsensical and characterless piece of trash.

It has that cheap grindhouse sort of feel that makes it appealing and stupid. The plot isn't original or very filling, but it's entertaining enough, although it drops about half-way through. The characters are corny, the gore effects are laughable, and the film for the most part is fun.

A little better than others admit. It kept me interested enough to watch, yet uncomfortable enough to be uncomfortable. I thought it took the state of mental illness more realistically than many modern films.

Mill Creek's 50 Movie Pack: Chilling Classics Reviews
SCREAM BLOODY MURDER (AKA CLAW OF TERROR / MATTHEW/ CAPTIVE FEMALE) [1971/ 1973]: Shot in the year of 1971 but then not realised into theatres/ the Drive-In market until 1973. SCREAM BLOODY MURDER is another early 1970's horror film viewed as a precursor to the Slasher film which was to become big towards the late 1970's.
Much like Tobe Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE [1973] BLACK CHRISTMAS [1974],SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT [1974]; the film SCREAM BLOODY MURDER can be viewed as pioneering prototypical feature for a-yet-to-be-defined- sub genre. However the comparisons can be stopped right there with those films. Unlike those films which make the serial killer character either a masked maniac or an unknown killer with less focus upon them. SCREAM BLOODY MURDER tries to make the mentally disturbed killer the centre point of the plot (unlike the previously mentioned films which makes the potential victims the focus of the plot).
PLOT: In a rural US town a young boy called Matthew out of perverse obsession for his mother brutally kills his father with a tractor. However in a twist of fate Matthew loses his arm and is sent to an asylum. After the opening titles, Matthew now a young man is deemed fit for mainstream society and returns to his home. However once he finds out that his mother has remarried, he then kills his step-father and mother in a fit of rage.
Matthew then embarks across the nation in a senseless killing spree. Upon arriving in a small coastal town he soon has new obsession for a young struggling artist and a prostitute. So Matthew then is driven to kill in order to seduce her by murdering a maid and the elderly owner of a mansion. Which he then use to seduce and keep captive the artist.
THOUGHTS: Despite is best attempts to make the killer the centre point of the film unlike the vast majority of future slasher films. This film with ho hum performances and downright bizarre killings, such as the killing of a sailor with a metal artist palate knife (which are blunt). SCREAM BLOODY MURDER is A- grade early 1970's Exploitation Horror schlock with a faint hint of psychological horror thrown in for good mix. I'd strongly recommend SCREAM BLOODY MURDER for all slasher, cult and bad movie hounds. However in all good reason I'm going to give this film a simple 50% on the grounds of sloppy but enjoyably exploitive filmmaking.
