      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It misses perhaps as often as it hits, but Jim Carrey's manic bombast, Cameron Diaz' blowsy appeal, and the film's overall cartoony bombast keep The Mask afloat.

Tudo no filme é fantástico. Vale apena assistir? Com certeza e com a família. Nota: 10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Sheldon D Watched this as a child and thought it was funny. My wife had never seen it and all I did was talk it up, once the movie started I realized how unfunny it really was. I don’t think I laughed the entire time. She also didn’t like it. It is very childish and has a lot of slap stick cartoon comedy that just hasn’t aged well. The story plot is also very predictable and boring. I am glad it helped get JC going, but for me this is just not a good movie anymore. It’s mid at best. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Anderson O Watch The Mask often as a Kid. Has great and fun replay ability! Was told the comicbook source material was grittier, but the screenplay to The Mask, staring Jim Carey as the memorable Stanley Impkiss, shows a lot of range as a lead, and gave him a great amount of free roaming. Antagonist and Villian roles where more thorough was well. Strong visual effects of its time by industrial light and Magic. And sharp screen play for comedy. The Mask it works great 30 years later. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Theusx g Filme engraçado e divertido. Eu no momento rindo desse filme. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Daniel S Back in the day, the hit TV show In Living Color featured stars like Jim Carrey. Known for his goofy persona and crazy physical comedy routines, Carrey made a mark with his 1994 smash hit The Mask. I vividly recall watching this movie at 9 and laughing uncontrollably in the theater. The desire to own it on VHS was strong, and my parents fulfilled it. Carrey's unique comedic style in The Mask truly highlighted his talents. The film follows Stanley Ipkiss, a shy, unlucky romantic who faces bullying from various quarters, including his boss, landlady, and car mechanics. His companions are his dog Milo and co-worker Charlie Schumacher. Infatuated with Tina, a new client at his bank, Stanley's life takes a turn when he discovers a mysterious wooden mask at the city's harbor. When he puts it on, he transforms into "The Mask," a zany, green-headed character unbound by inhibitions or laws, seeking revenge on his tormentors and scaring off a street gang. Even today, The Mask remains a favorite in my DVD collection. Jim Carrey's performance, especially his Cuban Pete act and salsa dance with the cops, is a riot. Cameron Diaz shines in her debut role, exuding beauty and charm. Peter Greene's portrayal of the villain Dorian is chilling, especially when he transforms with the mask. The dog's transformation into the mask provides classic slapstick humor reminiscent of the Three Stooges. A timeless classic, The Mask is a must-watch for a good laugh and a stellar Jim Carrey experience, still ranking high on my list of favorites. Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer When his face turns green and his limbs get limber, Carrey's pretty much unstoppable. This cartoon-y creation is an amazing fusion of physical comedy and state-of-the- art cinema illusion. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 12, 2013 Full Review Michael Sragow New Yorker The gangland plot is flimsy (bad guy Peter Greene wears too much eyeliner), and the jokes are erratic, but it's a far better showcase for Carrey's comic-from-Uranus talent than Ace Ventura. Apr 12, 2013 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Carrey and his aggressive overbite are back, but this time he's better used as an ingredient instead of as the plot.
