Critics Consensus

Neat performance from Glenn Close aside, 101 Dalmatians is a bland, pointless remake.

David Ansen Newsweek While the adorableness quotient of the new "101" is never in doubt, fans of the original may feel that its wit and charm have been diminished...Cute and broad, this re-make's OK. What I miss--what I'd hoped for--was a tad more sophistication. Rated: 5/10 Sep 9, 2020 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Brilliant puppy wrangling, seamlessly blended with special effects, and a witty and sophisticated performance by Glenn Close as dazzlingly costumed Cruella DeVil more than compensate for spottier moments. Jun 6, 2018 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy [Glenn] Close creates an iconic, comically menacing character that lingers in the memory long after the bland nonsense of the film has faded. Tim L This film sets the gold standard for live-action remakes, blending timeless humour and wit that the whole family can enjoy. One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in its casting. The human characters, often secondary in the original, are brought to the forefront with warmth and depth, allowing us to connect with their love for their animals in a more meaningful way. The performances are strong across the board, but its Glenn Close who steals the show. Her portrayal of Cruella De Vil is nothing short of iconic - deliciously wicked, flamboyant, and utterly unforgettable - giving us even more of the villain we love to hate. What makes this adaptation especially charming is its cosy, quintessentially English atmosphere. It sits comfortably alongside other beloved British charmers like Love Actually, Notting Hill, and The Holiday. The film’s tone is warm and inviting, making it perfect for family movie nights or a nostalgic rewatch. Importantly, the film never loses sight of its true stars, the dogs! The Dalmatians remain the heart of the story, and their presence is as delightful and endearing as ever. Disney should use this film as a masterclass in adaptation. It respects the original while expanding on it in thoughtful, heartfelt ways - without pushing agendas or political messaging. An incredibly charming, warm, and lovingly crafted film that proves some classics really can be improved upon. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Allan L Not as bad as I had expected Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Cameron L Disney's best live action remake of the animated realm, easily. Glenn Close is too cute and adorable as Cruella De Vil, the human casting and characters are surprisingly interesting and likable. It's not a 100% shot for shot, line for line remake, and I appreciate it for it. They're changes in this movie, which the animals do NOT talk, thankfully, and the backgrounds are very atmospheric and lovely Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Tyler L Not really exciting a complete disaster Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
