Critics Consensus

Neat performance from Glenn Close aside, 101 Dalmatians is a bland, pointless remake.

David Ansen Newsweek While the adorableness quotient of the new "101" is never in doubt, fans of the original may feel that its wit and charm have been diminished...Cute and broad, this re-make's OK. What I miss--what I'd hoped for--was a tad more sophistication. Rated: 5/10 Sep 9, 2020 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Brilliant puppy wrangling, seamlessly blended with special effects, and a witty and sophisticated performance by Glenn Close as dazzlingly costumed Cruella DeVil more than compensate for spottier moments. Jun 6, 2018 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy [Glenn] Close creates an iconic, comically menacing character that lingers in the memory long after the bland nonsense of the film has faded. Robby B This is where the live action atrocities began. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Carson P Wait was this the very first of all the live action Disney remakes that continue on to today, well this is an odd but slightly better start because as much as it’s interesting and also funny it also kind of goes against the tone of the original by bassically making the villain the main charachter ( something we saw already with the first terminator ) and making it feel more like a home alone knock off than a 101 Dalmatians movie bassically the movies looks and lighting have the same as that of the first three home alone films ( yess I am including the third one which I actually found a hilariously entertaining guilty pleasure ) and it definetly has traps for the burglars that resemble marv Harry and those four from the third film. When they try to catch the dogs they get messed up such as slipping on a magazine, a bisons head falling onto one of their mouths and heck even cruella gets into traps when messing with farm animals in a farm as if she is thinking the puppies were there, the scenes feel also intimidating and kind of scary it looks as though Chris Columbus and John Hughes made it. If nothing else it’s worth a watch if you want to have a fun time burstin out in laughter to the ridiculousness of it all just like how I ironically did with home alone 3 and another thing this has in common with home alon it looks as though it takes place during Christmas or in a cold snowy area it’s that noticeable 6/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Madie R This movie would not have been possible without the talented Glenn Close. Always fun to watch this and see Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) and Mark Williams (Arthur Wesley) in the same scene. Cruella De Vil: [to a racoon who has just stolen her hat and is wearing it] Darling, red isn't your color. Give me the hat. Give me the hat, or you will become a hat. GIVE IT TO ME! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Dale R This is Disney’s first live-action adaptation of one of their animated classics. There are some things to like in this film. Glenn Close’s performance as Cruella De Vil is a wonderful over-the-top villain. Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams are good as Jasper and Horace. The other actors do fine, but they don’t have much screen time to develop any character. I think the movie does a good job of giving personality to the animals, especially Pongo and Perdy. Speaking of Perdy, I’m not sure why, but it bothered me greatly that they changed Pertitta’s name to Perdy. Things I greatly missed from the original were the helper animals from the farm. They are in this movie, but there are so many more animals that help rescue the puppies that there isn’t time to get to know them like in the original. I really missed Sgt. Tibbs, the cat that helps rescue the puppies from the house. Maybe a cat was harder to put in that role. Also, the car chase at the end of the animated movie doesn’t happen in this one and that was a highlight from that movie for me. There is some good stuff here, but I don’t think it is for everyone Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Valentine P Still one of the best live action remakes. I believe it matches the feeling of the animated movie perfectly. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Vergil L If only we knew how horrible Disney remakes would become back then.
