Desson Thomson Washington Post Gets bogged down with too many talking heads and long-winded departures into American political policy and -- at the beginning, at least -- rather cheesily sentimental music. Those weaknesses blunt what could have been a more sharply told story. Jan 24, 2008 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters As it articulates the families' trauma and distress, the film also shows the layers of context that have produced their frustrations. Mar 21, 2008 Full Review Marta Barber Miami Herald Even if you followed these events and know the details well, Shoot Down is quite revealing -- and moving. Audience Member I got to watch this film in my documentary filmmaking class. The Director and Producer came and talked about the film shortly after. I was not familiar with the accounts that happened back in 1996, which left me very interested in the first part of the film. The film flowed well for the most part, and had a well balanced approach so it wouldn't seem to biased. The scene with the shoot down was very well done, but it being in the middle of the movie was a problem. After that scene i felt like i was just waiting for the film to be over. The director told the class that she had trouble deciding where she was going to put the shoot down scene, and she decided to put it in the middle. Though i see why she did it because it flows well, and separates the documentary into three parts, it just seemed like it dragged on after that scene. I also found that the end lessened it's focus on Castro. Being down in Miami, and talking with my friends who are part of the Cuban Community, this is one thing they did not like at the end of the movie. This movie was put together well, and the director made some very good decisions in post production. Though it still tends to lose it's focus, and tries to hard to remain unbiased, that you lose the director's objective halfway through the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Well balanced documentary. A must see for all Cubans. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A serious eye opener... As a Cuban American living in Miami, I could not miss it! A must for an American, a Cuban... A Human! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The distance between Cuba and the US is not a matter of miles Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member These were American pilots shoot down over international waters, yet very few people seem to remember this tragedy. I went to see this documentary and it is excellent. Quality production and evenhanded editing give this true-life story its edge. I lived through these events in Miami, but I am not of Cuban descent. Yet, after leaving the theater I couldn't help but wonder had the last names of the American pilots been Smith or Johnson, how different would this story have unfolded. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Using a mixture of news footage and interviews, Shoot Down explores the run-up to and the aftermath of the shooting down of two civillian aircraft by Cuban Migs. It?s a powerful story and writer/director Cristina Khuly, whose uncle was one of those killed, has constructed a remarkably even-handed film. My only real criticism is that the heavy reliance on interviews and news footage does make the narrative a lot drier than it could have been. More here Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
